MEGAN NIELSEN, THE WORLD HERALD

Sarpy County Chief Deputy Greg London said emergency services responded about 2:50 a.m. to a 911 call that a woman was at a home at 8718 S. 143rd Ave. had been shot. London said there were four people at the Meadows residential development home at the time of the call: a man, a woman, a 19-year-old girl and a 14-year-old girl.

Five officers arrived at the house and a man broke the living room window and started shooting, London said. At least one bullet struck a police cruiser.

London said a deputy fired several shots in return. The Sheriff’s Office is awaiting an autopsy to determine whose gunshot(s) struck the man and killed him.

“He had made a comment to the effect that he was going to commit suicide,” London said.

London said investigators will review the home’s surveillance video and the officers’ bodycam video.

“We still have a lot of interviews and research to do before we know exactly what happened,” London said. “The Douglas County Crime Lab is also processing the information.”

Rebecca Geiger, 45, and an unidentified man were killed, Sheriff Jeff Davis announced at a news conference. The man’s name is expected to be released later today.

Officers performed life-saving measures on Geiger, but she died at the scene, Davis said. Geiger was a teacher at Westside High School.

The deputies have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, Davis said.

An Omaha Fire Department ambulance responded to the scene, as did La Vista and Papillion police. Douglas County provides emergency medical services in that area.

Monday morning, Sarpy County Sheriff’s deputies closed a stretch of 143rd Avenue between Meadows Parkway and Jennifer Road. A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office crime scene investigation vehicle was also on scene.

Officials said Monday that deputies had gone to the home about a month earlier in response to “a domestic incident” and followed up with a mental well-being assessment.
