Hamas official: Trump’s victory will not help resolve Palestinian issues

A senior official of the Islamist group Hamas has said he does not believe Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election will help resolve Palestinian issues.

Osama Hamdan of Hamas’s political bureau spoke to NHK in an online interview on Thursday. It came after news that Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed during phone calls on Wednesday to work together for Israel’s security.

Hamdan accused the previous Trump administration of pushing ahead with an excessively pro-Israel agenda. He said this approach has caused great damage to the Palestinians and efforts to solve their problems.

Hamdan also said a recently announced temporary ceasefire for the Gaza Strip lacks legitimacy. The proposal was intended to break the deadlock in ceasefire negotiations for the enclave.

Hamdan reiterated Hamas’s demand for a permanent ceasefire and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza as conditions for the group to strike a deal with Israel.

The official stressed that Hamas will continue to resist as long as Israeli forces launch attacks.
