Willy Adames is open to a position change in the Mets’ quest for free agency

Mets baseball president David Stearns has acquired star free agent shortstop Willy Adames from the Brewers. Adames is thought to be willing to consider third base, and Stearns has said Mark Vientos could play first base if necessary.

Adames should have plenty of interest.

The Dodgers, Braves and Giants did their best to acquire him via trade. Dodgers baseball president Andrew Friedman acquired him for Tampa Bay, but the Dodgers’ need doesn’t seem as urgent with NLCS MVP Tommy Edman performing so well in the postseason and Miguel Rojas expected to make a full recovery after offseason surgery.

The Royals, who are looking for a leadoff hitter, could consider Gleyber Torres, who filled that role very well for the Yankees.

If the up-and-coming Royals fail to acquire a high on-base guy, they could end up with superstar Bobby Witt Jr. move to leadoff (he would prefer to continue batting at second, but he has hit with the bases empty more times this year than anyone besides first men).

The Mariners, Giants and Blue Jays are also in the second base market and make sense for Torres.

David Ross would be a candidate for Brandon Hyde’s coaching staff in Baltimore. No decision is close, but what a great outcome that would be.

Dodgers first base coach Clayton McCullough remains a candidate for Marlins manager after Will Venable went to the White Sox and Craig Albernaz stayed in Cleveland.

White Sox star Garrett Crochet is available again.

The Dodgers and Padres were among the teams that made offers for Crochet last summer, but the collections problem kept them from getting the right value and they should do better now, even with just two years left before free agency.

The South Siders are unlikely to sell low on the ultra-talented Luis Robert after his down year. He is a candidate who must be dealt with at the deadline.
