Heard outside the Michigan State locker room: a massacre and a steak dinner

EAST LANSING – Michigan State’s three-game losing streak is over.

The Spartans (4-3, 2-2 Big Ten) never trailed as they won 32-20 against Iowa (4-3, 2-2) in homecoming on Saturday night.

Here are notable quotes from coach Jonathan Smith and players after the win:

Smith on getting a win after a bye week: “You lose three games in a row and then you have a week to really think about it. I think it speaks to the culture that these guys, led by players, want to build here and they’re bought in and they’re going and they’re still motivated.”

Kicker Jonathan Kim on setting a single-game program record with six field goals made: “I don’t remember exactly when during the competition, but someone came up to me and said, ‘Hey, you just set the record.’ I thought ‘what record?’ And then they ran away, so I thought, OK.

Smith at Michigan State beats Iowa at the point of attack on both sides of the ball: “We want to be known for being able to play that style of physical football and doing it well. It starts at the front.”

Receiver Montorie Foster on the Spartans posting 468 yards with a balanced attack: “I definitely think we have a high ceiling. In my opinion, we still have not reached our full potential.”

Quarterback Aidan Chiles on the offensive performance while settling for field goals: “I think we still did a great job moving the ball, we just have to finish now.”

Smith on Chiles: “He played, in my opinion, his best complete game tonight.”

Chiles on finishing 22-for-30 for 256 yards, one touchdown and an interception: “Ooh, that sounds nice.”

Chiles on his first-quarter interception: “That was just a stupid rookie mistake that I can eliminate very easily.”

Smith on the Spartans posted a season-high 212 rushing yards behind a strong performance from the offensive line: “I was really happy with that attacking front in particular because they haven’t been playing at the level they wanted to, and I thought that was the case tonight.”

Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams looking back on the victory: “In the bye week preceding this week, I think we had a great week and a half of preparation and got the boys in the right mindset.”

Smith on limiting star Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson to 98 yards on 14 carries, with 75 yards on a fourth-quarter touchdown run: “Tackling gang, we had to do it as a team. Those guys had to fit in the runs, but we have to get more than one guy on the ball. That guy is back a long time ago. I thought we did a good job with several guys coming there.

Safety Nikai Martinez on beating Iowa at its own game: “This whole week the emphasis was on the fact that we knew they were going to run the ball, they knew we were going to run the ball. It would be a bloodbath, we would come out on top.”

Smith on Lynch-Adams and Nathan Carter combine for 24 carries for 135 yards and a touchdown: “I think we got a nice 1-2 punch from both guys carrying it. We have confidence in both.”

Linebacker Jordan Turner on Michigan State’s defensive line: “I probably owe them a steak dinner tonight.”

True freshman receiver Nick Marsh on an impressive 11-yard catch to the Iowa 1 to set up the final touchdown: “I just hit him with a quick spinning motion. I know safety was over the chase so I hit him with a quick stick and then I started falling so I tried to put the ball in.

Smith on his journey to play at rival Michigan next week: “We will remain fairly consistent in our approach tomorrow. It’s all about learning from this, correcting and improving what we’ve seen, and then we’ll turn the page pretty quickly for next week. One of the best things about college football is playing rivalry games and this game means a lot.”
