CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Isolated lines of severe thunderstorms hit the Mountain State Saturday afternoon and evening, bringing gusty winds, lightning and heavy rain.

The first line of storms delayed the second half of WVU-Penn State in Morgantown by more than two hours. The first half ended just before the storm hit.

A second storm line delayed the Marshall-Stony Brook game in Huntington.

The heavy rainfall caused street flooding in some areas, including White Sulphur Springs.

As of 8 p.m. Saturday, Mon Power reported 5,100 customers had lost power, while Appalachian Power reported more than 2,500 customers were without service.

The National Weather Service said the storms preceded a strong cold front that is expected to bring more pleasant conditions to West Virginia next week. High temperatures Sunday and Monday are expected to top out in the low 80s. Nighttime lows next week will drop into the 50s.
