Idina Menzel attends Wicked premiere in LA with son Walker, 15

Idina Menzel and her son Walker have some family time on the red carpet!

On Saturday, November 9, the 53-year-old actress attended the Bad premiere in Los Angeles with a very special guest: her 15-year-old son.

The duo was all smiles at the event and even wore matching black outfits with white accents – Menzel in an all-black dress with one sleeve and fabric gathered at the shoulder which she paired with a black and white bag, while Walker wore a black suit, black shirt and black and white sneakers.

The highly anticipated film, directed by Jon M. Chu, stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo as Glinda and Elphaba, respectively. Menzel played Elphaba in the original Broadway production of Bad, alongside Glinda’s original actress Kirsten Chenoweth, and in addition to taking photos with her son, Menzel, she spent some time posing with Chenowith, Grande and Erivo on the red carpet at the LA premiere.

The Frozen actress shares Walker with her ex-husband, Taye Diggs. Menzel and Diggs met during the Broadway production of Rent in 1996, married in 2003 and divorced in 2013. The former couple remains on good terms and maintains a good co-parenting relationship.

In June, ahead of Walker’s 15th birthday in September, Menzel shared some relatable moments about life with a teenage son, an episode of PEOPLE out of 10.

“He’s great. He’s a teenager, but he still hugs me every now and then, so I’ll accept that,” she teased at the time.

“What amazes me is how erratic it is: one minute they don’t want anything to do with you, and the next minute they’re really showing you how much they need you,” she added. “You really have to be alert and willing to reach out and get out of the way and not take things too personally. Know that they feel your love, but they need their space too.”

Menzel also opened up to PEOPLE in 2021 about the transformative experience of parenthood.

“It was actually very liberating when I became a mother because everything was so self-centered,” she said in August 2021. “And when you had these beautiful little people to worry about, it teaches you priorities and perspective.”

The actress shared a sweet moment with her son in a 2021 interview Glamour. When she turned 50 in 2021, Menzel felt insecure about the milestone, especially the impact it had on her identity as a performer and actress.

Walker, who was 12 at the time, offered some confirmation.

“He says, ‘Mom, don’t look in the mirror and worry about how you look. You’re beautiful,'” Menzel told the outlet.

Her relationship with her son inspired her to practice self-love, she said in the interview, “to walk the walk and talk the talk” and set a positive example for her son.

Meanwhile, Menzel and Walker’s adorable mother-son Little Red Riding Hood performance wasn’t the only family-related event of the evening, with Chu having missed the premiere to be with his wife as the couple welcomed their fifth child. He later shared a video of the baby girl on Instagram to celebrate her arrival.
