Incoming Movie Review & Movie Summary (2024)

“Incoming,” from the “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” duo of Dave and John Chernin as co-writers and directors, is the next entry in this subgenre, and it’s a pretty good one at that! The jokes are funny (laugh-out-loud funny at times), largely because they’re not afraid to rattle off a little – a quality that many recent comedies that are too eager to fake-out their audience could learn from. In that regard, the kids in “Incoming” are messy, sometimes even ill-behaved, mean and clueless, just like we’ve all been in real life.

But most importantly, “Incoming” scores points for its casting instincts. Starring as Benjamin “Benj” Nielsen is Mason Thames, a flabby, good-eyed actor with the disarming attitude of an ‘80s teen movie star who wouldn’t feel out of place in something like “Adventures in Babysitting.” (Speaking of which, the film itself contains healthy doses of nods to more vintage teen flicks.) The geeky, well-meaning Benji is in love with his misanthropic big sister Alyssa’s best friend, Bailey (played by Ali Gallo and Isabella Ferreira, respectively). Meanwhile, dumped by her ex-girlfriend for another girl, Alyssa tries unorthodox ways to get over her heartbreak and obsesses over her nose job, thinking that a supposedly better appearance will lead to a better life.

Elsewhere, Benj’s best friends Eddie, Connor, and Danah “Koosh” Koushani—played by the delightful trio of Ramon Reed, Raphael Alejandro, and Bardia Seiri, respectively—are also having trouble on the first day of school. The super-rich Koosh, living in the shadow of his older, more popular brother, is desperately trying to pull off his annual back-to-school party—a drunken, drug-fueled affair. Eddie and Connor, meanwhile, are hoping to keep their heads down and get through the year in one piece, with Connor especially struggling to escape a cruel nickname given to him by the school bullies. There’s also, of course, the popular girl—at their school, it’s Katrina (Loren Gray), someone the boys would do anything to be cool enough to hang out with.
