Indiana Elections Guide: Polling Places, Voter ID & More – Indianapolis News | Weather Indiana | Indiana traffic

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The run-up to the 2024 general election is almost over.

Millions of Hoosiers will go to the polls Tuesday to vote for president, governor, U.S. senator and other state and local offices.

Here’s what you need to know for Election Day.

When can I vote?

On election day, polling stations open at 6 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. All times are local.

If you are in line when the polls close at 6 p.m., you can still vote.

Where is my polling station?

Indiana law says you must vote in the county where you are registered. Some counties have specific polling places within the precinct, while some counties use voting centers that allow you to vote outside your precinct.

You can find your polling place at www.IndianaVoters.com by clicking on “Find My Polling Place.”

What should I bring?

Every voter must present a government-issued photo ID before he or she can vote on Election Day.

Under Indiana’s photo ID law, your ID must:

  1. Show your photo
  2. Show your name and the name must match your voter registration
  3. Show an expiration date and be current or expire sometime after the last general election (November 8, 2022)
  4. Issued by the State of Indiana or the United States Government.

In most cases, an Indiana driver’s license, Indiana photo ID, military ID or U.S. passport will suffice.

If you don’t have a photo ID when you get to the polls on Election Day, you can cast a “provisional ballot.” You must present a photo ID to your county elections board no later than 13 days after Election Day at noon in order for your provisional ballot to be counted.

All BMV locations in Indiana will provide free state-issued identification cards on Monday and Tuesday. BMV branches are open on Mondays until 8 p.m. and on Tuesdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

What am I not allowed to wear to the polls?

Indiana election law prohibits voters, poll workers and poll workers from wearing clothing and objects that promote a candidate, party or preference on a ballot question. This includes items with images, photographs, or likenesses of a current elected official.

I am disabled. Can anyone help me vote?

Yes. If you have a disability or cannot read and write and need help voting, a poll worker can help you or you can choose another person to help you. If you choose another person to help, that person cannot be your employer or your union representative.

You must ask for help before entering the voting booth.

What are my voting rights?

The United States Constitution says I have the right to participate in civic life.

  • If I am registered to vote in Indiana, I am entitled to vote in this election.
  • I have the right to vote alone or with assistance and I can choose who I want to help.
  • Even if I have a conservator, I am allowed to vote unless a court specifically says I cannot.
  • I have the right to vote the way I want.
  • I have the right to get help if someone tries to stop me from voting.
  • I have the right to show how to make my choices on my ballot.
  • If I am standing in line when the polls close, I should be allowed to vote.
