Ipswich Town 1-1 Man Utd: Why Ruben Amorim expects the team to suffer for a long time

Amorim looks good.

He walked into Portman Road wearing a very large coat, which the much milder temperatures didn’t really require.

There was a purpose in his actions. His pre-match hug with opponent Kieran McKenna was warm and nothing more.

And Rashford’s opener inside two minutes was the perfect start. However, it wasn’t long before Amorim called on Diogo Dalot and Alejandro Garnacho during a short break in play to explain how he expected their combination to work.

When that conversation was over, he explained to Jonny Evans and Casemiro what he wanted.

The term learning on the job could not be more appropriate.

“Based on what we’ve seen this season, did we really expect this to be a transformed Manchester United team?” asked Chris Sutton on Radio 5 Live. “Ruben Amorim wants to change the style, but the players have been away on international duty. It is impossible for him to just flip a switch.”

The style, as expected, consisted of three centre-backs and full-backs. This is the “idea” that Amorim told everyone they would see once he started work.

In terms of selection, the positions of Noussair Mazraoui and Amad were the surprises. Right-back of a back three is Mazraoui’s fourth position of the season.

Amad is a winger, but was considered a better alternative to Alejandro Garnacho at full-back, who was given a more forward role.

The Ivorian’s quick run and cross set up Rashford’s goal and late in the match he noticeably chased back to collect a loose ball in the United field before Mazraoui urged him back onto the pitch.

“In three days he has improved so much defensively,” Amorim said. “His opponent was the left back all the time, so it was like having a winger following him. It’s easier because he’s just following one man and man to man. He was so focused and did a great job.”
