WEST LAFAYETTE – Purdue football couldn’t conjure up something new and successful for their seniors’ final game at Ross-Ade Stadium.

No. 4 Penn State earned a 49-10 victory on senior day against the Boilermakers. Purdue lost its ninth straight win since its season-opening win over Indiana State. Road trips to Michigan State on Friday and Indiana over Thanksgiving weekend cap off a difficult season.

In four games against current College Football Playoff contenders, Purdue was defeated 195-17. Reviewing another mediocre performance.

If you could condense the offense’s entire season into one game, it might have been De’Nylon Morrissette setting up for what he thought was a touchdown catch, except he was standing solidly behind the pylon. Still no first quarter touchdowns against FBS opponents this season. Sporadic rushing success between the 20s is not a Big Ten offense. The Nittany Lions defense is legitimate, but the inability to complete even one drive against the best teams on the schedule remains troubling. Max Klare’s seven catches for 91 yards and a touchdown in the fourth quarter were a lone bright spot.

Defense: F

Had no answer for the domesticated Yeti known as Tyler Warren. The tight end went for 119 yards and a touchdown on seven receptions before halftime. He also served as the lead blocker several times as the Nittany Lions, following the lead of previous opponents, attacked the rim. Drew Allar almost never found himself in a third-down situation. The 80 and 93 yard touchdown drives made it possible to open the game, eliminating any margin for error this offense could have had.

Special teams: B

The bar is low, but Ben Freehill converting a 22-yard field goal counts as a step forward. Keelan Crimmins’ early 58-yard kick put Penn State at its own 7. Forced them to drive 93 yards for the touchdown. We’re grasping at straws a bit here. Field position is hardly this team’s problem.

Coaching: F

Hard to ignore the contrast between how bold Penn State was willing to be to move the ball and how conservative Purdue has to be to move the ball between the 30s. Down 14-0, with no guarantee that your team will make another long drive, kicking a field goal seems academic. After discussing things at halftime and making adjustments, the offense gained three yards to go three and out to open the second half.

Game of the game

Warren immediately took 3rd and 1 at the Purdue 48, and the 6-6, 260-pound Sasquatch in pads rumbled into the end zone untouched. Early in the third quarter it became 28-3.

Player of the game

Warren looked like a man among boys, totaling 185 yards and two touchdowns to go with his blocking.
