Jack Edwards reflects on 19 years as the voice of the Bruins

The Bruins celebrated Edwards before, during and after Sunday’s 2-0 shutout of the Kraken at TD Garden.

Edwards hung up his headset at the end of the 2023-2024 season after his speech pattern changed and became slower over time.

“Let’s get the elephant in the room out of the way first. The doctors still haven’t determined what’s going on between my brain and my mouth,” Edwards said, before smiling and adding, “Despite the insistence of Toronto fans, there is nothing wrong with my brain.”

The Bruins unveiled a mural in the booth that Edwards shared with color analyst Andy Brickley which read, “From high above the ice,” his signature opening during a pregame ceremony.

“I am filled with gratitude for the players, the organization and the fans who put the roof over my head for 19 years,” Edwards said. “And it is truly an honor to have my family’s name on the wall of the booth where I made a living in a world-class arena.”

Fans will still throw Edwards’ catchphrases at him when they see him.

“Tumbling muffins, juicy rebounds and Chinese mustard are the main ones,” said Edwards, who added that he signed a jar of Chinese mustard for a fan at a recent book signing.

Over the years, Edwards worked as a reporter and anchor at several Boston stations, including WCVB and WHDH. He held similar roles at ESPN, broadcasting everything from the Little League World Series to the Olympics, before landing his dream job with the Bruins.

“I grew up with two new newspapers, the Boston Herald and the Boston Globe, and I read Joe Fitzgerald And Tim Horgan And Will McDonough And Leigh Montvilleand it impacted me in a way that kids don’t have now,” Edwards said. “It told me the value of words and I incorporated that into my style, and I’m an emotional guy, and it was an organic fit between my style. I don’t want the kids to adopt that style, but it worked for me and it was a dream come true.

“And it’s an honor to have my name in that box.”

Geekie more involved

Morgan Geekie returned to the lineup for Saturday’s shutout against the Flyers in Philadelphia and was back on the line Sunday Matt Poitras And Trent Frederik after a healthy scratch for Thursday’s rout in Carolina.

Geekie struggled early in the campaign but showed signs against the Flyers that he is heading in the right direction. During 17 shifts he made a few shots, a few goals and assisted on Poitras’ goal.

“I thought he was on top of the pucks. I thought he was more physical. I thought he was much more up front,” Montgomery said. “He was much more involved in attacking opportunities, so there is growth, but again he has to keep doing well, just like everyone else, so that we can get better.”

Before landing in Boston last season, Geekie played two seasons with the Kraken, who picked him up in the expansion draft from the Hurricanes. He had 16 goals and 50 points with Seattle, but scored 17 goals in his first year with the Black & Gold.
