Jane’s Addiction Concert Ends After Perry Farrell Punches Dave Navarro

Stop!

A Jane’s Addiction concert in Boston was abruptly ended after singer Perry Farrell punched guitarist Dave Navarro.

In video footage from Friday’s show captured by fans, Farrell walks up to Navarro as they play the band’s “Ocean Size” and shoves the guitarist with his right shoulder. After looking back for a moment, Farrell approaches Navarro again, frowning, and begins yelling inches from his face as Navarro attempts to create distance between them with his forearm.

The interaction culminates when Farrell throws a punch to Navarro’s upper chest, prompting a crew member to intervene and separate the band members. Shortly after, more crew members and bassist Eric Avery hold Farrell down as Navarro walks away.

Although the setlist for their recent tour typically includes three or four more songs after “Ocean Size”, the group did not return to the stage after the brawl.

Representatives for Farrell, Navarro, Jane’s Addiction and Live Nation did not immediately respond to Entertainment weekly‘s request for comment.

Farrell’s wife, Etty Lau Farrell, posted about the incident on Instagram on Saturday morning. “There was clearly a lot of tension and animosity between the members,” she wrote. “The magic that made the band so dynamic. Well, the dynamite was lit. Perry got in Dave’s face and bodychecked him.”

Lau Farrell said her husband was upset by the noise level on stage. By the time “Ocean Size” started, he was “screaming just to be heard.”

“Perry’s frustration grew night after night,” she wrote. “He felt like the volume on stage was excessively loud and his voice was being drowned out by the band. Perry suffered from ringing in his ears and a sore throat every night. But when the front-row audience began to complain to Perry, yelling at him that the band was going too loud and they couldn’t hear him, Perry lost it.”

Lau Farrell also claimed that the fan videos only told part of the story, writing that the ultimate winner of the fight was Avery. “While Dave held Perry at bay to de-escalate the situation, Dan rushed over to de-escalate it as well by holding Perry down,” she explained. “Dave walked away to take off his guitar. Eric walked up behind Dan in the dark and onto the stage, grabbed Perry in a headlock and punched him three times in the stomach. Kevin, (the) crew member with (long hair), pulled Eric away. Eric then casually walked up to apologize to (the) audience for ending the show early.”

The singer’s wife also described the aftermath of the heated confrontation. “Dave still looked handsome and cool in the middle of a fight,” she wrote. “Perry was a crazed animal for the next half hour — he didn’t eventually (sic) calm down, but he did break down and cry and cry. Eric, well, he either didn’t understand what de-escalation (sic) meant or he took advantage of the situation and threw a few cheap shots at Perry.”

Jane’s Addiction is currently embarking on their first tour since 2010 with their original lineup — Farrell, Navarro, Avery and drummer Stephen Perkins. It kicked off in May following Avery’s long-awaited return to the group in 2022 and Navarro’s recovery from long COVID. The band’s website lists 15 more upcoming shows.
