Jannik Sinner beats Daniil Medvedev to reach US Open semi-finals

NEW YORK — World number one Jannik Sinner reached the US Open semifinals for the first time on Wednesday evening, beating 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Sinner, who became the title favorite after the Week 1 eliminations of Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, is the only man left in the field with a Grand Slam trophy. He won his first at the Australian Open in January, beating Medvedev in the final in five sets after losing the first two.

This matchup was unusually chaotic, as they took turns dominating a set. First, Sinner had the upper hand. Then, Medvedev took over. Then, Sinner regained the upper hand in the third set. In the fourth set, at 3-all, Sinner got going, saved a couple of break points, and broke Medvedev to lead 5-3.

Sinner, a 23-year-old Italian who was cleared of doping less than a week before the US Open began after testing positive twice in March for traces of an anabolic steroid, will face No. 25 Jack Draper of Great Britain on Friday for a place in the title fight. Draper won the only match between the two, at the Queen’s Club in 2021.

Sinner is the third Italian to reach the US Open semifinals since the Open era began in 1968, after Corrado Barazzutti (1977) and Matteo Berrettini (2019). He also became the fourth-youngest man in the Open era to reach the semifinals at all four majors, behind only Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Jim Courier.

The other semifinal on Friday is between No. 12 Taylor Fritz and No. 20 Frances Tiafoe, the first all-American men’s match at a major tournament in 19 years.
