Jentry Chau vs the Underworld: What you need to know about Ali Wong’s animated show, cast and more

Being a 16-year-old in high school means fighting demons, but for Jentry Chau (Ali Wong), the hero of Jentry Chau vs. the underworldthe fights aren’t just figurative; she literally wards off evil entities from the underworld.

Created by Echo Wu, Jentry Chau vs. the underworld is a new animated series that follows a Chinese-American high school student whose life is turned upside down when a dangerous demon king tries to steal her powers. But make no mistake, Jentry is Also navigating her share of traditional teenage problems — like exploring romantic interests, struggling with an adult who always thinks he knows best, or straining to maintain a high social status among her peers. Although it focuses on all things supernatural, it is largely rooted in real-life themes that will resonate with people of all ages and from all walks of life.

“Sometimes in finding your own identity you come face to face with your own demons,” Wu tells Tudum. That sentiment was the north star of the writers’ room as they worked on the series. “There are different layers to what that means. (It) rings absolutely true in Jentry. (She) tries to figure out what these powers mean to her. Are they part of her? Are they cursing her? You see this character trying to figure out who she is.

It’s not just the show’s themes that are rooted in reality, but the animation itself strives to immerse audiences in a world that largely resembles our own — you know, except for the ghosts and mythical creatures. “I wanted this show to feel super grounded,” Wu says. “I think it’s refreshing in animation when you have a series that isn’t about this magical realm. I wanted it to feel real and for the characters to be in our world.

Wu’s dedication to authentically portraying a young woman’s life this time also extended to the show’s approach to Jentry’s coveted powers. “If a teenager had superpowers, I don’t think she would handle them well. I think she would actually hide it. She would think it’s social suicide to have powers at a time in your life when you’re trying to fit in and be cool. It was an interesting dynamic to play with.”

With the feel of a classic Saturday morning cartoon and elements that appeal to young and adult audiences, it’s time to meet the next iconic hero, Jentry Chau.
