Kansas’ Dickinson away vs. Arkansas should practice this weekend

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Although Kansas star Hunter Dickinson will miss Friday’s charity exhibition against No. 16 Arkansas due to a sprained foot, Jayhawks coach Bill Self told ESPN he is not concerned the injury will affect the program in the long term.

Dickinson himself, the 7-foot-1 AP preseason All-American who averaged 17.9 points last season, aggravated the foot injury last Friday during the No. 1 “Late Night in the Phog” event in Kansas. He sat out practice Thursday, but Self said he is expected to return to practice this weekend.

Transfers Rylan Griffen (Alabama) and Shakeel Moore (Mississippi State) are also expected to miss Friday’s exhibition due to injuries but will return to practice this weekend. Self said he is hopeful all three players will be available for Tuesday’s exhibition against Washburn.

“We’re not going to be as good offensively (without them against Arkansas),” Self told ESPN after the team’s practice Thursday.

Kansas opens the regular season on Nov. 4 against Howard.

Arkansas is also expected to be shorthanded, as coach John Calipari told reporters this week that the team will be without several key players on Friday.

Calipari tweeted Thursday that both he and Self decided to play quarters in the sold-out exhibition so they can work on “situational opportunities” that could help both teams.

“We look forward to an incredible atmosphere at Bud Walton Arena tomorrow night!” Calipari tweeted. “I can’t wait to walk out of the (team) home tunnel for the first time! Let’s do this!”

The Razorbacks will donate proceeds from the game to Arkansas Children’s Hospitals. Kansas will donate the proceeds to Fore The Kids Foundation.

This offseason, Self added several players to his roster to increase depth, which was a challenge for the Jayhawks last season. Self said he wants to see how his team responds to an atmosphere with more than 19,000 fans at Bud Walton Arena on Friday.

“I think (we’ll learn) how the guys handle adversity,” Dickinson told ESPN. “Every team is different. With a new team this year, obviously we don’t know what to expect if things catch fire. And I think that will be a good test for us. I think that’s why Coach Self founded the game because it is a difficult opponent on the road in a hostile environment.”
