Kate Moss’ appearance at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show was the biggest talking point about the event’s return, five years after it was canceled.

The lingerie brand’s catwalk show was axed after the 2018 edition received low ratings and drew criticism that the show was sexist, outdated and lacking diversity.

It returned to New York on Tuesday, where Moss, 50, made her debut at the event, while her 22-year-old daughter Lila also appeared on the catwalk.

The show also featured musical performances from Cher, Tyla and Blackpink’s Lisa.

The fashion show, which launched in 1995, would normally attract millions of viewers every year, as well as big names like Rihanna and Taylor Swift.

But ratings fell and controversies plagued the brand, among other things former marketing head Ed Razek‘s apology in 2018 for comments he made about why transgender and plus-size models were not seen on the runway.

This year’s comeback promised to “celebrate all women”, featuring Brazilian model Valentina Sampaio, who became the first transgender model to represent Victoria’s Secret in 2019.

There was also an appearance by another transgender model, Alex Consani.

Plus-size models including Ashley Graham and Paloma Elsesser also walked the famous catwalk, but some saw this as a symbolic gesture given the company’s history.

Although Kate Moss’ appearance in a black lace dress and signature angel wings was unexpected, a few familiar faces returned to the catwalk.

Gigi and Bella Hadid presented a number of looks, including matching red lingerie, while fan favorites Barbara Palvin and Candice Swanepoel also walked.

Former America’s Next Top Model host Tyra Banks, 50, made her first appearance at the event since 2009.

Another model to return was Adriana Lima, who walked in 2018 before the show was canceled.

Reactions to this year’s show have been mixed Dani Maher of Harper’s Bazaar writing: “Are there any moments burned into my mind with the same urgency (as previous shows)? I’m not so sure.”

Executive producer of the event, Janie Schaffer, highlighted its diversity, saying there were 50 models from 25 different countries.

But Maher wrote that despite this, “the catwalk was still overwhelmingly dominated by thin, conventionally attractive models”.

This was repeated by Associate Editor of Teen Vogue, Aiyana Ishmaelwho wrote: “Watching one thin model after another take to the runway, I was catapulted back to my childhood living room, where I watched women who didn’t look like me set a beauty standard that most women will never achieve.”
