PEOPLE’S ORGANIZATION FOR PROGRESS WILL REGISTER VOTERS ON THE LAST DAY BEFORE NOVEMBER ELECTIONS, CALLS FOR SAME-DAY REGISTRATION

The People’s Organization For Progress (POP) will register voters tomorrow, which is the last day to do so in New Jersey before the upcoming November elections. It will conduct voter registration on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, at the corner of Broad Street and Market Street (near 777 Broad Street) in
Newark, NJ.

POP is a grassroots volunteer organization committed to racial, social and economic justice. It has been conducting voter registration on Saturdays for eight months since March.

“We normally do voter registration on the weekend. But because the elections on November 5 are so important, we decided to come out tomorrow to give people one last chance to register,” said Lawrence Hamm, president of People’s Organization For Progress.

“After tomorrow’s registration deadline, we will step up our game and undertake activities and efforts to educate voters about the elections, especially who is running for office, what offices they are running for, key related issues and what is at stake state,” Hamm said.

“In the final days before the elections, we will focus our attention on voter mobilization. Registering and educating voters is very important. But if they don’t go to the polls and vote, it will all be for nothing,” he said.

“All of us, both organizations and individuals, who have done voter registration, must do everything we can to get the people we have registered to the polls on Election Day. We can’t wait this out. The costs of not participating are too high,” he says.

“After this election is over, we must work to reform our voter registration system. One of the necessary reforms is same-day registration. There should be no closing date for registration. People should be able to register on Election Day,” Hamm said.

“The way we do it now, the way we have done it for over a hundred years, is old-fashioned and needs to be changed. We have the capability, technology, information and systems that will enable the implementation of this reform,” he said.

“A lot of people don’t think about voting until Election Day, and then they don’t go because they’re not registered. Same-day registration allows them to vote. This will increase voter participation and that will be good for the democratic process,” he said.

“Same-day registration is not a new idea. The nation’s capital, Washington, DC and twenty-three states have it. I call on our state representatives to pass legislation to make this a reality in New Jersey and across the country,” he said.
