Kim Kardashian on the possible release of Menendez Brothers

Kim Kardashian has been very vocal about her thoughts on the Erik and Lyle Menendez case. Last month, she wrote an essay for NBC News advocating for their release from prison after visiting the brothers at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility near San Diego with Cooper Koch, star of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.

“I don’t think they ever got a fair second trial and I feel like since watching Ryan Murphy’s Monsters show, it really opened my eyes and showed me so much about abuse,” Kardashian said. Variety‘s Marc Malkin at the Academy Museum Gala Saturday. “Imagine if no one believed you.”

Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón announced that the brothers will have a hearing on November 29 to re-evaluate newly discovered evidence in their case.

‘The Public Prosecution Service should actually correct the injustice they committed many years ago. That doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have spent time. It just means that I truly believe they deserve a second chance and that they’ve spent enough time on it,” Kardashian said.

Erik and Lyle were sentenced to life without parole in 1996 after a retrial in their initial standoff. The brothers murdered their parents in August 1989, claiming they had been repeatedly sexually abused by their father for years. These details were omitted from their second and decisive trial.

“The punishment they received has been in place for almost 35 years. That is more than a first-degree murder charge,” Kardashian said. “I am someone who believes in second chances and I really believe in them.”

Koch also spoke with Malkin at the Academy Museum Gala about why he might not be interested in Monsters co-creator Ryan Murphy’s interest in filming bonus episodes of the Netflix series if the brothers are released from prison.

“I think we’ve told the story,” Koch said. “We did it.”

He added: “I think I’m ready to move on to the next thing. I loved talking about it and I loved advocating for them and I’m really excited for them to hopefully come out, but in terms of being Erik again, I think I’m ready to let that go to leave.

Koch said he is interested in meeting with Luca Guadagnino to discuss playing Patrick Bateman in the filmmaker’s remake of “American Psycho.”
