Lakers’ Anthony Davis goes to specialist after brutal eye poke against Raptors

During the Los Angeles Lakers’ win over the Toronto Raptors, star big man Anthony Davis took a hit in the eye and was forced to leave the game. He went up for a block attempt on Raptors center Jakob Poeltl and was hit in the face.

The large man lay on the ground for a minute, clearly showing some pain. He then got up and walked to the Lakers’ locker room.

After the match, it was reported that Davis experienced some swelling in his eye. ESPN NBA insider Dave McMenamin also reported that Davis will see a specialist to examine his eye as a “precautionary measure.”

Sources told ESPN’s Dave McMenamin that Davis experienced swelling as a result of the contact, making it difficult to keep his left eye open. Davis will have the eye examined by an ophthalmologist on Monday as a “precautionary measure,” sources said.

Lakers head coach JJ Redick weighed in on Davis after the game. He didn’t have a big update, just that the big man needed some time to regain clear vision.

“I just know he got poked in it,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said of Davis’ eye injury. “He was having trouble seeing. Obviously it takes a little bit of trauma to the eye, it takes some time to get your clear vision back. But other than that, no update.”

Luckily for the Lakers, they don’t play their next game until Wednesday against the Memphis Grizzlies. This should allow Davis to heal and prepare for the match.

Davis was special to start the year, garnering some MVP talk early in the season. Last night he averaged 32.4 points, 11.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game.

Before Davis left in the third quarter, he was well on his way to another strong game. He had scored 22 points, grabbed four rebounds and blocked two shots.

The hope is that Davis won’t have to miss any time because of this issue. Los Angeles likely wants to be cautious with him due to his lengthy injury history. He also suffered a corneal abrasion in the same eye in March.

Davis is the engine that keeps the Lakers going and he seems to finally be taking the title of the team’s best player. Along with co-star LeBron James, Davis gives the Lakers a legitimate chance to compete on the floor every night.
