Liam Payne ‘jumped’ to his death in Argentina, local authorities confirmed, according to the New York Post. The former One Direction singer died on Wednesday after falling from his hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. He was 31 at the time.

Liam Payne has ‘jumped to his death’ in Argentina, authorities confirm

Amid growing speculation about the circumstances surrounding his fatal fall, Pablo Policicchio, director of communications for the Buenos Aires Ministry of Security, confirmed that Payne jumped to his death. “(He) had jumped from the balcony of his room” on the third floor of the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires,” Policicchio said in a statement, according to the outlet.

Authorities added that the fall resulted in “extremely serious injuries,” leading to his death at the scene. Police rushed to the hotel in response to an emergency call just after 5 p.m. local time, warning of an “aggressive man who may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol,” the statement said, according to the Associated Press.

In a 911 call obtained by the outlet, the hotel manager can be heard saying they “had a guest overpowered by drugs and alcohol… He’s destroying the whole room and, well, we need you to get someone to send, please.” The outlet added that the manager’s voice “became more anxious as the conversation continued, noting that the room had a balcony.”

Meanwhile, in a translation of a transcript from La Nacion, the hotel worker said the musician was drunk and believed to be “under the influence of alcohol and drugs”, insisting that someone had to come to the venue “urgently”. Payne’s name was not thought to have been mentioned during the conversation.
