INDIANAPOLIS – Bennedict Mathurin scored 38 points, Tyrese Haliburton had 35 points and 14 assists and the short-handed Pacers defeated the Knicks 132-121 on Sunday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

The Pacers improved to 5-4. The Knicks fell to 4-5.

Myles Turner added 26 points and Pascal Siakam added 14. Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 33 points. Karl Anthony Towns had 30. Former IU star OG Anunoby added 25.

The Pacers’ fourth quarter was one of their best of the season, as they finished with 40 points on 14 of 22 shooting, including 8 of 13 from 3 and 4 of 5 at the line. The Pacers scored 1.59 points per possession in the fourth.

Tyrese Haliburton hit a 3 from 7 yards out and the Pacers are up by 10. Haliburton has 31 points and 12 assists in what is likely his best offensive effort of the season. He also just beat Ben Sheppard for a crucial corner 3.

Myles Turner just drilled back-to-back three-pointers. He has 23 points. Tyrese Haliburton just dished out a pair of assists and he has 11 more to go with 28 points. Bennedict Mathurin has 33 points. Pascal Siakam had fourteen. The players the Pacers needed to get them through all their injuries did so tonight. The Pacers are 8 of 11 from the floor and 4 of 5 from 3 in the fourth.

Pascal Siakam just hit a 3 to tie it after a TJ McConnell bucket, and then that 3 turned out to put the Pacers ahead because OG Anunoby’s 3-pointer earlier in the frame was waved away during the video review because he was on the sideline stepped . Big break for the Pacers there.

A lot of mistakes on both sides and the Pacers stuck with it. They were 12 of 14 from the line in the third, while the Knicks were 11 of 12. The Pacers scored 1.30 points per possession in the third, while the Knicks were at 1.20.

As is usually the case, once the Pacers started to gain some momentum, the Pacers allowed the Knicks to get going. With a 6-0 run, the Knicks take the lead again.

Jarace Walker just drilled back-to-back three-pointers to give the Pacers the lead back and they are on an 18-6 overall run. The Pacers are 8 of 12 from the floor this quarter, 4 of 6 from 3 and posting 1.46 points per possession.

The Pacers came out shot for shot with the Knicks and the game was tied at 65 with 9:52 left in the third, but the Knicks are on a 10-0 run. The Knicks are 6 this quarter. The Pacers are 2 of 6.

Bennedict Mathurin and Tyrese Haliburton are helping the Pacers gain some momentum, but the Knicks continue to have answers as the Pacers don’t have a great fit for their stars. A deep jumper from OG Anunoby and a 3-pointer from Jalen Brunson gave the Knicks a 3-point lead at halftime.

At the half, the Pacers are shooting 22 of 49 from the floor, 9 of 23 from 3, 5 of 6 at the line for 1.10 points per possession. The Knicks are 25 of 44, 6 of 15 from 3, 5 of 7 with 1.19 points per possession. Bennedict Mathurin has 21 points on 7 of 9 shooting, including 5 of 6 from 3-point range. Tyrese Haliburton is 14 on 5 of 8 shooting, including 3 of 5 from 3. Anunoby leads the Knicks with 19 on 7 of 10 shooting, Brunson is 15 on 6 of 8 shooting, Towns has 11.

The Pacers got scoring flurries from both Bennedict Mathurin and Tyrese Haliburton in that series. Both are 3-of-3 from the floor this quarter with two three-pointers. Mathurin has 10 points in the period and 21 so far in the game. Haliburton has eight points and thirteen before the afternoon.

The Pacers have struggled to keep the offense going, making just two of their first eight shots this period. Knicks are now 5 of 10 and 3 of 6 from the field. It’s starting to show how deep the Pacers are digging into their bench.

The final 3:57 of the first was when the Pacers had to dig deep into their bench with Nembhard, Nesmith and Toppin all out. Rookie Johnny Furphy and two-way contract players Quenton Jackson and Enrique Freeman all appeared, as did TJ McConnell and Jarace Walker. Only McConnell scored from that group, but the Pacers still defeated the Knicks 7-3 in that stretch. At the end of the first, the Pacers are 12 of 28 from the floor, 5 of 12 from 3 and have 1.07 points per possession. The Knicks are 11 of 21, 1 of 5, 3 of 4 at the line allowing 1.01 points per possession.

The Pacers’ momentum disappeared almost as quickly as it seemed. The Knicks took back the lead with a 6-0 run and the three buckets came on easy layups from Miles McBride, Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby.

The Pacers are on an 11-2 run and starting to get the offense going. Tyrese Haliburton is showing some juice. He hit a 3 and he already has five assists to push the ball forward. Bennedict Mathurin already has eight points on 3-of-4 shooting, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range, and Haliburton just got him for one.

With Nesmith and Nembhard out, matching the Knicks’ starting five on defense is not at all easy. Ben Sheppard has Jalen Brunson, Bennedict Mathurin on Mikal Bridges, Tyrese Haliburton has to guard Josh Hart. Pascal Siakam stars in OG Anunoby and Myles Turner stars in Karl Anthony Towns. And it’s about to get harder to get off the bench.

The Knicks are 6 of 9 from the floor so far. All five starters have at least one bucket. The Pacers are 5-of-9, but the Knicks are allowing 1.45 points per possession.

The Pacers lineup is the same as Friday, with Andrew Nembhard and Aaron Nesmith out.

During his pre-game press conference, Rick Carlisle said Aaron Nesmith is out until at least December, Andrew Nembhard is out for about two weeks and Obi Toppin is also out for Sunday’s game.

TJ McConnell is available after being listed as doubtful and missing Friday’s game due to illness.

Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said guard Cameron Payne is out. Miles McBride is an in-game decision.

Pacers forward Aaron Nesmith is out for the fourth straight game with a sprained left ankle. Point guards TJ McConnell (illness) and guard Andrew Nembhard (knee soreness) were listed as questionable after missing Friday’s game in Charlotte. Forward Obi Toppin (sprained left ankle) was also questionable.

Centers Isaiah Jackson and James Wiseman are out long-term with torn Achilles tendons.

For the Knicks, forward Precious Achiuwa (left hamstring strain) and center Mitchell Robinson (left ankle surgery) are out and have not played yet this season. Reserve guards Miles McBride (illness) and Cameron Payne (left hamstring strain) are questionable.

5:00 PM ET Sunday, November 10, 2024 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Nat Newell: Knicks 111-89

The injury-ravaged Pacers aren’t in a great position to take on the Knicks collection of frontline wings of Brunson, Bridges, OG Anunoby and Josh Hart. Indiana’s advantage – depth – is likely depleted with Aaron Newsmith out and TJ McConnell, Obi Toppin and Andrew Nembhard questionable. Unless Tyrese Haliburton (14.7 ppg, 37.9%, 25.4% 3s, 7.7 apg) suddenly starts playing like an All-NBA player again, the Pacers won’t be able to keep up.
