Live updates from Donald Trump’s golf club shooting: Trump safe after gunfire nearby, FBI calls incident ‘apparent assassination attempt’

Donald Trump was the target of an assassination attempt in Florida on Sunday, the FBI said, though the Republican presidential candidate’s campaign and law enforcement confirmed he was safe and unharmed. The U.S. Secret Service said agents “opened fire on a gunman” near the boundary of Trump’s golf course and seized an “AK-47-style rifle” with a scope and a GoPro camera at the scene.

The suspect fled from the brush where he was hiding and drove off in a black car. A witness helped police identify the vehicle, and authorities later located it. “We now have someone in custody who is a potential suspect,” Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said at a news conference.

According to Bradshaw, Trump was golfing at his West Palm Beach course, near his Mar-a-Lago home, when the gunman was spotted in the bushes a hole away.

“President Trump is safe following the gunfire in his area,” campaign spokesman Steven Cheung confirmed in a statement, while Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris expressed relief that her political rival was unharmed.

In a fundraising message, Trump reassured his supporters, saying, “Don’t be afraid! I’m safe and sound, and no one was hurt. Thank God!”

This is the second assassination attempt on Trump in recent months, following an incident on July 13 in which the former president injured his ear while speaking at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
