For the second time in two years, Liga MX’s Club America will face the Crew at Lower.com Field. This time, there’s a trophy on the line.

The Crew and Club America will battle it out tonight for the Campeones Cup, a one-match title fight between last season’s MLS Cup champions and the Liga MX champions. Last year, when the two clubs met in Columbus, it was in the group stage of the Leagues Cup tournament.

With both teams already secured a spot in the knockout stages of the League’s Cup, the Crew and Club America battled it out for the top spot in their groups. Columbus won 4-1 behind two goals from striker Cucho Hernandez, who expects an intense match tonight.

“It’s going to be an interesting final,” he said. “Of course it’s going to be difficult because they have a lot of good players. You play the final differently. … We know this feeling, how to play the final.”

In the first round of changes, Club America made three changes:

  • Striker Victor Davila replaces Brian Rodriguez
  • Striker Diego Valdes replaces Alejandro Zendejas
  • Striker Rodrigo Aguirre replaces Henry Martin

From the top of the Club America penalty area, striker Christian Ramirez launched a shot attempt. Goalkeeper Luis Malagon cleared Ramirez’s shot from a save.

The Crew managed to hold Club America to a clean sheet in the first half, despite giving their opponent the chance to fire shots in the first half:

  • Recordings: Crew (3), Club America (6)
  • Shots on target: Crew (1), Club America (2)
  • Errors: Crew (9), Club America (4)

After a long pass from striker Cucho Hernandez, striker Diego Rossi received the ball in front of the Club America goal and was able to make an attempt at a header. Rossi’s shot went high, to the right, but goalkeeper Luis Malagon cleared the ball away from the goal.

The Crew were awarded a corner when it was decided that Club American was the last to touch the ball after a shot attempt by midfielder Max Arfsten. Forward Diego Rossi took the corner for Columbus and striker Cucho Hernandez was able to find the ball in the air for a header attempt.

Hernandez headed the ball towards the Club America goal, but was too powerful and it went a few inches over the bar.

Midfielder Sean Zawadzki was shown a yellow card for a foul on Club America’s forward Alejandro Zendejas. Zawadzki committed the yellow card violation while attempting to make a tackle.

The team’s goalkeeper Patrick Schulte easily saved his first goal of the match against Club America, saving an attempted shot from Club America forward Brian Rodriguez that was headed straight for Schulte in the middle of the goal.

After nearly two minutes of medical attention following the Crew corner kick, midfielder Sean Zawadzki was able to return to the game for Columbus. While Zawadzki was being treated for an apparent abdominal injury, the Crew were down one player.

On the first corner kick of the Campeones Cup, Crew forward Diego Rossi executed the attempt, sending the ball into the Club America penalty area. After the kick was cleared from the penalty area by Club America, Crew midfielder Sean Zawadzki went to the ground, holding his stomach and requiring medical attention.
