Long Island Forecast: Coastal flooding possible Sunday

The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flooding statement for parts of Long Island from Sunday morning through the afternoon.

But as for rain, no rain is forecast on the island for the next three days, although some may be on the way Wednesday evening.

The weather service said up to a foot of “flooding above grade” was expected in vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline during high tides on Sunday. The agency’s flood declaration covered northwest Suffolk, southwest Suffolk, southeast Suffolk and northern Nassau, and parts of Connecticut.

“Do not drive on flooded roads,” the statement warned.

The weather forecast for Sunday calls for sunny skies and a high of 62 degrees.

A red flag warning was issued for the island on Saturday amid dry, windy conditions. Relative humidity levels are forecast to remain low Sunday, and another warning is possible and “could be a wind issue,” weather service meteorologist Bill Goodman said.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation on Saturday ranked Long Island as “very high” for its Fire Danger Rating Area Risk Level, meaning fires from all causes can easily start and “spread rapidly and increase in intensity rapidly.” .

A combination of high winds and low humidity with dry fuels – or things on the ground like leaves or pine needles – is a recipe for fast-spreading fires.

“If you start a fire under these conditions, it can spread quickly,” Goodman said.

New York has a statewide burn ban that prohibits outside fires until November 30.

Monday will see highs in the mid-60s, above average temperatures for this time of year, Goodman said. The rest of the week will slowly cool to the low 60s.

The weather forecast predicts a mostly sunny Monday and Tuesday, and a partly sunny Wednesday. However, a 60% chance of rain is forecast for Wednesday night, with showers through Friday.

With the potential for about an inch of rain during that time, Goodman said, the wet ground could reduce the chance of a fire.

“That would especially put a dent in fire conditions,” he said.
