State of Florida was astonished by Boston College On Monday night they lost 28-13 to the Eagles at Doak Campbell Stadium.

Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei completed 50 percent of his passing attempts but failed to develop a consistent rhythm in the final stretch. He showed flashes, but ultimately ESPN commentator Louis Riddick believes the Seminoles have a long way to go on offense before the passing game can be reliably established in Tallahassee.

“There’s just no chemistry, rhythm, consistency with him connecting with his wide receivers right now,” Riddick told Scott Van Pelt after calling the game for ESPN. “And there’s really no second-response, dynamic component to his game … His counterpart on the other end of the line today (Thomas Castellanos), you saw it. It didn’t have to be perfect for him. When it started to go a little bit wrong, he said, ‘Guess what? I’m taking over now. I’m doing this.’ Guess who was able to do that for Florida State a year ago before he got hurt? Jordan Travis.

“When you watched Boston College play Florida State last year at Boston College, Jordan Travis gave the Boston College defense a headache. They didn’t have that piece here today.”

Riddick said Uiagaleleli either has to become more efficient and consistent with his wide receivers, or the passing game will always be a “frustration.” Through two games so far, Uiagaleleli has completed 58 percent of his passes (40 of 69) for 465 yards, one interception and a touchdown, both of which came against Boston College.

If Uiagalelei can’t step up in the same way Travis did for the ‘Noles during his career, Florida State will have to look elsewhere for leadership. However, Riddick hasn’t seen anyone willing to step into the role after two weeks of watching this year’s Florida State football team.

“This is a team that’s fighting right now to not have one of those imploding seasons that absolutely costs people their jobs,” Riddick said. “This could get really ugly for them, if the leadership of this football team — and I’m not talking about Mike Norvell — I’m talking about the locker rooms. They’re missing guys like Jordan Travis. They’re missing guys like Braden VisserThey miss boys like Jared Versguys that are pros now, that this staff told me last year when I was here, these are the glue guys. These are the fundamental guys.

“These are the guys that helped turn around Mike Norvell’s time here and get them to a 13-0 season. Well, they’re gone. So who’s it going to be now? Did you see a single guy tonight that looked like he could grab this football team and say, ‘We’ve got to wake up and get things going.’ I didn’t see it.”

Florida State is still searching for a new identity as they move into Week 3. FSU will host Memphis where they hope to reset their season and move past this 0-2 start.
