Luke Fickell was crushed by Wisconsin’s heartbreaking loss to No. 1 Oregon

This loss will linger for a while. Saturday night in Madison, the Wisconsin Badgers had a chance to shake things up for the country by taking down No. 1 Oregon. Luke Fickell and Co. were neck and neck with the top team in the country.

At one point in the second half, Wisconsin led 13-6 and it looked like the biggest upset of the year was about to happen. Instead, the Badgers couldn’t make a late play and Oregon was able to escape with a 16-13 win.

Give credit to Dan Lanning and his players as they put the game on the line. Wisconsin frustrated Dillon Gabriel all night, but the team’s incredible effort fell short. After the final whistle, Fickel met the media and you could tell he was crushed by the loss:

“That’s crushing,” Fickell said, via 247Sports. “We haven’t been able to find a way to finish at the moment. It’s hard not to find a way to get back to the top. It’s clear they fought hard, they did everything we asked them to do, and they played how we expected them to play.”

The Ducks were heavy favorites and not many thought Wisconsin would keep this one close. However, the defense was nothing short of fantastic, causing Oregon to face all kinds of problems. It was the most anyone has seen Gabriel this year.

However, on offense, Braedyn Locke and others were unable to get into a rhythm. Phil Longo’s play-calling was also highly questionable, causing people on social media to be furious with him. With Wisconsin in the second half, it really felt like it would be a night to remember at Camp Randall.

Unfortunately, everyone was reminded of the biggest upset against Penn State, with the Badgers once again falling just short. Down three points with less than two minutes remaining, Locke’s interception to seal the Oregon win was heartbreaking.

Now Wisconsin has games against Nebraska and Minnesota to try to get its sixth win of the year. But for now, everyone will be wondering what could have happened against Oregon if a few games had gone differently.
