Maccabi/Ajax: Israeli football fans attacked in Amsterdam, Israeli authorities say

CNN

Israeli football fans were attacked overnight into Friday in a “serious incident of violence in Amsterdam”, Israeli authorities said, with the government saying it was sending planes to evacuate affected civilians.

Hundreds of fans of Israeli football team Maccabi Tel Aviv “were ambushed and attacked in Amsterdam on Thursday evening” as they left the stadium after a Europa League match against Dutch side Ajax, the Israeli embassy in the United States said on social media platform X.

A social media video shared by the embassy showed the violence was against Maccabi fans.

CNN has not yet been able to verify those videos.

Israeli officials said fans of the Maccabi Tel Aviv football team were ambushed and attacked as they left the Johan-Cruijff Stadium after a match against Ajax Amsterdam on November 7, 2024 in Amsterdam.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said 10 civilians were injured and advised Israelis in Amsterdam to stay in their hotels.

“The impression from the reports is that the situation is calming down over the past hour,” Sa’ar said.

According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, Sa’ar also asked his Dutch counterpart Caspar Veldkamp to help take Israelis from their hotels to the airport.

In a statement from his office, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the violence “severe” and said he was ordering the “immediate release of two rescue planes” to help Israeli civilians.

The Israeli leader also urged Dutch authorities to “take strong and swift action against the rioters and ensure the peace of our citizens.”

The Israeli military said it was in charge of the evacuation flights.

“The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) is preparing to immediately conduct a rescue mission under the coordination of the Dutch government,” the army said. “The mission will deploy with cargo aircraft and will include medical and rescue teams.”

Israel’s Foreign Ministry said Friday that about 30 people have been arrested so far. The statement did not say when these arrests occurred or who was arrested.

Maccabi fans had been in the Dutch capital ahead of Thursday evening’s Europa League match against Ajax, which the local side won 5-0.

Amsterdam police said they had increased their presence in the city center on Wednesday evening, citing “tensions” in several areas, a day before the match.

Officers “prevented a confrontation on Wednesday evening between a group of taxi drivers and a group of visitors coming from the adjacent casino,” police said in a statement on X, noting another incident in which a Palestinian flag was pulled down in central Amsterdam by unknown perpetrators.

Police also said a demonstration was planned near the stadium on Thursday ahead of the football match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
