English Premier League giants Manchester United fired coach Erik ten Hag on Monday after two and a half years at the helm of the legendary club.

The Dutchman was appointed in April 2022 and has won the 2023 Carabao Cup and the 2024 FA Cup during his time.

But the club failed to qualify for this season’s Champions League, Europe’s premier competition, and currently sit 14th in the Premier League after their worst start to the season in 35 years.

Ten Hag was informed of the decision less than 24 hours after a 2-1 defeat against West Ham United.

“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him the best for the future,” the club said in a statement.

It says assistant coach Ruud van Nistelrooy, a legendary striker for the club during his time at the top of English football in the 2000s, will take charge as interim head coach while a permanent replacement is brought in.
