Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Day 4 Summary

Day 4 of the Paris 2024 Olympics brought more glory to India, with the shooting events continuing to shine. The duo of Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh secured a bronze medal in the 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team event, adding to India’s medal tally. With this achievement, Manu Bhaker became the second Indian athlete to win two medals in the same edition of the Olympics, after Norman Pritchard.

While some Indian athletes excelled in their disciplines, others were eliminated early during the Summer Games.

Let’s take a comprehensive look at all the action and highlights involving Indian athletes on the fourth day of the quadrennial event:

To shoot

Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh won a bronze medal in the mixed team 10m air pistol, beating South Korea 16-10 in a thrilling match.

With this medal, Manu Bhaker became the first Indian athlete to win two Olympic medals in the same edition. Earlier, she won bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol event.

This is Sarabjot Singh’s first Olympic medal and he is the sixth Indian shooter to achieve this feat.

Archery

Archery saw a day of mixed results for India with Bhajan Kaur reaching the quarter-finals while Ankita Bhakat suffered a heavy defeat.

Bhajan Kaur was superior to Poland’s Wioleta Myszor in the round of 16 and won convincingly 6-0.

However, the Indian archery side suffered a setback when Ankita Bhakat was knocked out just before Kaur’s match. Despite leading 4-2 and being just one set away from victory, Ankita lost the last two sets, resulting in a 4-6 defeat to Poland’s Wioleta Myszor and missing out on the next round.

Dhiraj Bommadevara, who was India’s best performer in the rankings round, had a painful exit in the round of 32. After beating Czech Adam Li 7-1, Bommadevara suffered a shootout defeat to Canadian Eric Peters. Both shooters hit 10 in the last hit but the Canadian’s effort was closer to the circle.

Boxing

The Indians had a challenging day in the boxing ring as both participants suffered heavy defeats.

Amit Panghal was knocked out of the Paris Olympics after losing 1-4 on points to Zambia’s Patrick Chinyemba in the 51kg Round of 16 match. Panghal struggled against his third-seeded opponent and eventually went down with scores of 29-28, 27-28, 28-29, 27-30, 28-29.

In the women’s featherweight round of 32, Jaismine Lamboria had a tough match against Tokyo 2020 silver medalist Nesthy Petecio of the Philippines. The match was one-sided, with Jaismine losing by a unanimous 5-0 decision, ending her Olympic journey in the preliminary round.

In the final match of the day, Preeti Pawar suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the round of 16 of the women’s 54kg. Against Colombia’s Yeni Arias, who won a silver medal at the 2023 World Championships, Preeti lost by a margin of 2-3.

Rowing

India’s only rower to compete at the Olympics, Balraj Panwar, was knocked out of the medal hunt after finishing fifth in the men’s single sculls quarter-final at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium.

The 25-year-old clocked a time of 7:05.10, which was not enough to advance to the medal rounds. He will now compete in the C/D semi-finals, where he will compete for a final ranking between 13th and 24th place.

Badminton

Dynamic duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty triumphed in their final group stage match in the men’s doubles at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Tuesday, beating Indonesia’s Muhammad Rian Ardianto and Fajar Alfian convincingly in straight sets on Court 3 at the La Chapelle Arena.

Satwik and Chirag completed the match in just 40 minutes, winning 21-13, 21-13 to secure a spot in the quarter-finals.

Conversely, Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa were eliminated from the women’s doubles tournament after losing all their group matches, losing 21-15, 21-10 to Australia’s Setyana Mapasa and Angela Wu, to finish bottom of Group C.

Hockey

The Indian men’s hockey team maintained their unbeaten run in Pool B with a 2-0 win over Ireland in their third match of the Olympics at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium. Captain Harmanpreet Singh scored both goals, in the 11th and 19th minutes of the match.
