Markus Burton injury update: TBS broadcast reveals unfortunate news about the Notre Dame guard

Notre Dame guard Mark Burton is out for the remainder of Tuesday evening’s game Rutgers with a knee injury, it was revealed on the TBS broadcast.

Burton suffered the injury in the first half when a Scarlet Knights player landed on top of him. He had to be taken to the locker room and was later seen back on the bench with his leg up as a sideline reporter Allie LaForce offered the update on his status.

“Burton walked out of the locker room and you can see he looks devastated,” she said. “He has his foot up and he will not return to this match. Just a reminder to everyone, if they missed it, he fell pretty hard and hit his knee pretty badly. He went back to the locker room and decided he would not return to the game. They will wait until after the game before taking him for further evaluation of his knee.”

Burton, the ACC Rookie of the Year in 2023-2024, is the leading returning scorer for the Fighting Irish with 17.5 points per game, in addition to 4.3 assists last year. He’s gotten off to an even better start through the first five games this year, averaging 21.4 points on 34.6% from 3-point range.

Burton made his only shot attempt of the game and has two points as Notre Dame held a 35-34 lead at halftime. Fighting Irish coach Micah Shrewsberry opened up the challenge the team faces without him in the second half.

“He’s one of our most important ball handlers,” the coach explained. ‘One of the guys for whom we arrange a lot of business. They have increased the pressure and we just have to deal with it a little better. We need to settle down. There are several guys who have to bring it and help us. We have to have a better attack.”

Markus Burton, a three-way recruit from Penn High School (IN), has been a gem of a player compared to his recruiting position. He was listed as the No. 152 player and No. 24 point guard in the class of 2023 according to the On3 Industry Rankinga weighted average using all four major recruitment media companies.
