McDonald’s fan favorite returns today after nearly a decade off its menus

McDonald’s is bringing a fan favorite menu item back to Britain after almost a decade of absence. Starting today, and for a limited time only, the McRib returns to menus across the country.

Thanks to its rare, limited-edition appearances, the pork-based McRib has gained a cult following among McDonald’s fans. It was first introduced in 1981 by the fast food chain, before being ‘permanently’ removed from menus in 2005.

However, this is not the case in Germany and Luxembourg, where the sandwich proved so popular after its initial introduction that it has remained a full-time menu item ever since.

And despite the farewell, the sandwich has returned several times over the years. This was last in Britain between 2014 and 2016. In the past it has been theorized that the return of McRib tends to coincide with falls in the price of pork, while McDonald’s has previously said the limited appearance comes from a desire to ensure that the menu is varied all year round.

It contains no bones, but still has an oddly shaped pork patty that is ribbed and resembles ribs. As those who were there for the latest release will remember, it is topped with barbecue sauce, pickles and onions on a long bun.

Thomas O’Neill, head of menu at McDonald’s UK said: “It’s more than just a sandwich; it’s a phenomenon. We heard our fans loud and clear – the petitions and pleas from fans on social media – and after nearly a decade of waiting, we’re happy to bring back this iconic menu item.

“Knowing how loved the McRib is, we had very little choice: we had to make it happen. It was time to take it a step further and satisfy the cravings of McRib enthusiasts across the country.

McDonald’s has not yet confirmed how long the McRib will return to Britain, so is advising customers to act quickly. The burger costs £4.49 for a single burger and £6.19 as part of a medium extra value meal.
