Michigan State 32, Iowa 20, final: A really strong performance from Michigan State after the bye week. The Spartans have a total offensive margin of 468 yards and a defense that played a standout first half, allowing the Spartans to take an early lead. They may not be in the category of Ohio State and Oregon, but Michigan State showed it can still compete with the rest of the Big Ten.

4th quarter

0:40: Michigan State’s defense forces four consecutive incompletions into its own goal and the Spartans will be able to run out the clock at this point. Michigan State 22, Iowa 14

2:03: Nick Marsh makes two key catches, one for 24 yards on 2nd-and-19 and the other for 11 yards to get MSU inside the 1-yard line. Nathan Carter scores from one yard out, and Michigan State answered all three of Iowa’s touchdowns with scores of their own to maintain the lead. Michigan State 32, Iowa 20

7:22: After being contained, Iowa star Kaleb Johnson gets free around the left side of the line for a 75-yard touchdown run on Iowa’s first play of its drive. The Spartans break up the two-point conversion attempt. Michigan State 25, Iowa 20

3rd quarter

0:49: Suddenly we have a shootout in Spartan Stadium. After no touchdowns in the first half, we had three in our first three drives in the second half. Iowa goes eight plays and 69 yards, including a key facemask penalty on D’Quan Douse. Michigan State 19, Iowa 7

4:34: Michigan State answers Iowa’s touchdown with a touchdown of its own. Aidan Chiles hits Montorie Foster Jr. with an 18-yard strike, capping his best drive of the season, going 5-for-5 and adding a 26-yard run on a scramble. Michigan State 19, Iowa 7

2:28: Michigan State has the longest drive of the first half, 74 yards, coming up on 4th and 2 and the Iowa 6. The Spartans lined up to go for it, but a false start pushed them back and forced their fourth field goal off. the first half. Michigan State 12, Iowa 0

8:26: Iowa gets the first two first downs of the game, but the Spartans’ first two incompletions – including a nice pass breakup from Ed Woods – and the Spartans force a punt. Michigan State 9, Iowa 0

1:07: Bad series for Aidan Chiles. An early intentional grounding put MSU behind the sticks, and on third-and-long he misfired on a throw over the middle and it was intercepted at MSU’s 45-yard line. Michigan State 6, Iowa 0

4:03: Two consecutive 3-and-outs to open the game for MSU’s defense. Iowa quickly tried to get 3rd and 2, but Michigan State was ready and stopped the run attempt. Michigan State 6, Iowa 0

5:58: Two drives, two field goals for Michigan State to start the game. A 37-yard catch by Montorie Foster, set up by a nice play-fake by Aidan Chiles, was the key play on that drive. Lots of contact on a third down throw into the end zone, but MSU didn’t get the call. Michigan State 6, Iowa 0

9:25: The Spartans’ defense forces a 3-and-out on the first possession, with Khris Bogle getting a good third down to force an incompletion. Michigan State 3, Iowa 0

11:06: Michigan State’s first four offensive plays all go four eight yards or more in a strong start for the Spartans’ offense. Nate Carter and Kay’ron Lynch-Adams each had runs of eight yards or longer. After a red zone stall, the Spartans open the scoring with a field goal. Michigan State 3, Iowa 0

Foreplay: Good news on the injury report for Michigan State: no Jordan Hall, so the Spartans will have their starting linebacker back. Ade Willie is also not on the injury report, while Avery Dunn and Alante Brown are questionable.

EAST LANSING – Michigan State’s second half of the season begins Saturday night at Spartan Stadium, and Spartan fans will be hoping things go better than the end of the first half.

Michigan State will host Iowa in the 2024 homecoming game Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.

The Spartans will look to turn things around after three straight losses to end the first half of the season, the last two coming in big fashion against Ohio State and Oregon.

Iowa comes in at 4-2 with an improved offense led by former Michigan quarterback Cade McNamara.
