Michigan State Spartans football vs. Purdue Boilermakers

MSU kicks in the first second half of the drive

That was the first punt of the evening for the Spartans. Purdue has gone into overtime two games this year when trailing by more than 14 points, so this drive will be important in preventing a comeback.

Rest

This game started scary for MSU as Purdue moved the ball quite easily on the first drive to take the lead, but the rest of the way things went about as well as it could for the Spartans. Michigan State has scored on all four of their drives so far, the first time since 2016 they started four for four. Chiles was sharp and the guns came into play around him. Leading 24-3, Michigan State has the ball to start the second half.

Touchdown, MSU!

There were some fireworks on that ride. Chiles picked up a third-and-10 with his feet, then dropped one in the bucket for Foster, who gained 33 yards. Then an over-the-shoulder throw and catch to Nate Carter for 20 yards scored a touchdown. It’s now 24-3, late in the half.

Blocked field goal keeps score 17-3

Michigan State has had some rough patches this year, but Purdue has struggled. That was a botched snap and a blocked field goal after a pretty nice drive. MSU takes over inside their own 10.

Touchdown, MSU!

There’s Nate Carter. That drive was mostly his, and he gets the short touchdown run to extend the lead to 17-3. The drive appeared to be over after an interception, but the call was made due to a defensive penalty. MSU took advantage of the second chance with a touchdown.

Purdue fumble traps Spartans

Ball! Maverik Hansen gets the recovery, but a large number of Spartans were in the backfield and wreaked havoc. MSU is well set up now.

Kim good from 43, 10-3 MSU lead

Another good drive for the Spartans results in points. Lynch-Adams is in the spotlight tonight, still no sign of Nate Carter.

The defense offers three and out

Nice response from the defense after allowing points on the opening drive. Let’s see if the offense can get some early distance.

Touchdown, MSU!

That was fun. Chiles made a couple big plays and then threw a dart to Montorie Foster for a seven-yard touchdown. Unfortunately, Jack Velling suffered a huge blow in the driveway and was carried away. He gave a thumbs up along the way. Kayron Lynch-Adams got all the carries on that first drive, over Nate Carter. Something to look at.

A BAG! But Purdue takes the early lead

For the first time in almost two months, the Spartan defense comes up with a sack. It was provided by Angelo Grose on third down in the red zone. However, Purdue moved the ball well and made good use of the connection between QB Hudson Card and tight end Max Klare. Devin Mokobee, the running back who started for Purdue in the Big Ten championship game two years ago, was also used heavily.

Friday evening lights!

Purdue ball first, MSU won the coin toss and decided it was the right call. Football time!

Michigan State has lost six of seven and is on a three-game losing streak entering Friday night’s game against Purdue.

The good news is there is still time to salvage the season for the Spartans and earn a bowl berth. At 4-6, Michigan State must win its final two games, both at home, to become bowl eligible. MSU hasn’t been to a bowl game since 2021 and head coach Jonathan Smith would like to get a taste of the postseason in Year 1 at the helm.

The Boilermakers are winless in the Big Ten and have lost nine in a row after winning their season opener against Indiana State. With the regular season finale against Rutgers next week also being a winnable game, this is a good opportunity for MSU to build some momentum for the program going forward.

The Spartans are back in primetime and are the only power conference game on Friday’s schedule. Against bottom-feeding Purdue, Michigan State needs to take care of business and be ready to play.
