Microsoft fixes major issues with Outlook and Teams after a day-long outage

Microsoft (MSFT, Financial) said Monday it had regained control of Outlook and Teams services, which had stopped working globally. The problems started in the morning and affected critical business applications. After they occurred, many office workers were unable to communicate. Before it stabilized, Downdetector collected more than 5,000 reports of outages during peak hours.

Microsoft released a fix and claimed by the evening that most people could regain access, while some Outlook web users were still locked out. Complete restoration should be possible on Tuesday. Earlier in the day, the company attributed slower speed to the recovery process, but said it was working around the clock to address other issues.

This outage comes after a year of massive global technology disruptions. However, unlike previous events, such as CrowdStrike’s IT outage this year, this did not have the same effect, crippling industries and causing billions of dollars in damage.

Such incidents have highlighted the reliance on cloud services as key business solutions. Organizations remain under pressure to increase their efforts to ensure their infrastructure can withstand certain impacts during an outage.

For businesses and users, Microsoft’s updates best illustrate the need to continually monitor service health portals for real-time recovery information. The tech giant also reiterated its intention to implement faster outage solutions to maintain user confidence in its Microsoft 365 ecosystem.
