Mike Elko Talks Conner Weigman’s Struggles and Texas A&M’s Offense: ‘Nothing Was Easy’

Mike Elko spoke to reporters Saturday night following Texas A&M’s disappointing loss to Notre Dame.

One of the topics discussed was the performance of quarterback Conner Weigman. Weigman threw for just 100 yards on 12 of 30 attempts and also threw a pair of interceptions that night.

It was a stunning performance from a quarterback who entered the year expected to be among the SEC’s best players in 2024 after recovering from an injury that cost him most of the 2023 season.

Elko told reporters after the game that they could never get Weigman into a rhythm. Finding areas where he feels comfortable will be a focus of the coaching staff this week as the Aggies prepare to face McNeese State in Week 2.

“We had to go back to the tape and figure out how to put him in better situations to make him comfortable,” Elko said. “He wasn’t in a rhythm and nothing was easy. We kept trying. We just couldn’t get there.”

Texas A&M has another option at quarterback in Jaylen Henderson if it sees fit to try someone else under center in the coming weeks. Henderson played well in limited snaps last season, leading the Aggies to wins over Mississippi State and Abilene Christian.

Texas A&M gets a brief reprieve in Week 2 with the arrival of McNeese State in College Station, but the Aggies will play Florida in Week 3 to kick off SEC play in Gainesville.
