Mike Tyson is okay with being an underdog against Jake Paul; oddsmaker says why

In a fight between one of the greatest boxers of all time and someone who rose to fame through YouTube, social media and the Disney Channel, the latter is the betting favorite.

The odds currently have 27-year-old Jake Paul as the favorite over Mike Tyson, 58, for their highly anticipated Friday night fight in Dallas.

Of course, Paul is new as this is his third fight of the year. He is also 29 years younger than Tyson. Tyson, meanwhile, hasn’t had a professional fight since 2005; his fight with Roy Jones four years ago was an exhibition.

Tyson was mostly calm and short of breath during Paul-Tyson’s final press conference on Wednesday – the opposite of his opponent, who even took bets with those on the card, including co-main eventer Katie Taylor. The most excited Tyson got at the latest Paul-Tyson press conference on Wednesday was when he emphatically said, “I’m not going to lose.” Furthermore, he was very small, but not that sweet.

His confidence is understandable: in every training video Tyson puts out, he looks incredibly dangerous, especially for someone who is almost 60. However, the odds don’t seem to respect him.

Tyson doesn’t seem to mind that much, though.

When Fox News Digital asked him how disrespected he felt under the adverse circumstances and why he thought he was the underdog, his answer was, as usual, short.

SUPER BOWL CHAMP HOPES MIKE TYSON KNOCKS JAKE PAUL’S ‘FREAKING HEAD OFF’

“I’m fine with everything, I’m fine with everything,” Tyson said in typical Tyson fashion.

Granted, DraftKings Director of Sports Operations Johnny Avello said the lines are more disrespectful to Tyson, who sits around +160 and Paul at -200.

“He didn’t even look that good at the end of his career – he struggled against guys who had no names. Here he is now at 58 – he looks good, I think he’s in pretty good shape is, but it’s one thing to be in good shape; it’s another thing to be in shape,” Avello said in an interview with Fox News Digital.

“Paul isn’t known as a great fighter, while Tyson is. So I’d say it’s more like disrespect.”

Avello also said it was difficult to come up with necessarily fair odds when one half of the main event doesn’t have many recent examples to base anything on.

“We were thinking about this all over the map and thinking about what (the odds) should have been,” Avello said.

However, despite several six-figure bets on Paul, Avello noted that almost 70% of the money is on Tyson for a variety of reasons – Tyson fandom plus Paul hate being one of them.

It’s on pace to be the most bet-laden fight of the year. A popular bet people make is that Tyson, with his power, will win 22-1 in the first round.

“That cost a large amount of money,” Avello said. “The liability can add up quite quickly.”

We’ll take Tyson at his word when he says he’s “fine” with being the underdog – but there’s no doubt he’ll certainly be fine if that bet comes to fruition.
