MLB reportedly makes decision on Yankees fans over Mookie Betts incident

MLB has reportedly made a decision regarding the two New York Yankees fans who interfered with former Boston Red Sox star Mookie Betts.

The league banned fans from attending Wednesday’s Game 5 of the World Series, a league spokesperson told The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty. In Game 4, fans grabbed Betts’ glove and pried it open to release the ball he caught in foul territory.

Austin Capobianco, 38, of Connecticut, was ejected following the incident in the first inning of the Yankees’ 11-4 victory Tuesday night. Another fan, whom ESPN identified as John Peter, was ejected alongside Capobianco.

New York released a statement agreeing with MLB’s decision and the MLB Players Association also wished fans would be barred from attending Game 5. Darren Capobianco said his brother Austin was a season ticket holder for the Yankees. The club has not determined what the status of those season tickets would be after Tuesday’s incident.

The fans’ actions immediately went viral and provoked a range of reactions, from those who found it funny to those who condemned the actions. Betts told reporters after the game that his pulse was fine, and that the Los Angeles Dodgers star did not escalate the situation further.
