Naomi Osaka shows off another bow-inspired outfit at the US Open

Naomi Osaka was once again a top performer on the US Open field.

The tennis player, who lost in straight sets (6-3, 7-6 (5)) in the second round to Czech Karolina Muchova, again wore a specially designed outfit with lots of bows on Thursday evening in the Arthur Ashe Stadium, in which she lost in straight sets.

After securing her first-round victory over 10th-seeded Latvian Jelena Ostapenko on Tuesday in a white-and-green outfit with lots of bows, Osaka opted for a white-and-black look, with a large white bow around her top and smaller bows on the backs of her shoes.

The Japanese tennis star collaborated with fashion designer Yoon Ahn to create the day and evening outfits for her return to the US Open after a 15-month maternity leave.

The custom looks also included special warm-up attire for her competitions in Flushing.

“The inspiration that fueled the look for me — and this is maybe a Japanese term — is that I feel like a ‘magical girl’ on the court,” Osaka said in a statement from Nike. “There’s a moment of transformation for me when I walk onto the court, and I have a lot of fun playing, so it’s a really big motivation for me to want everyone who sees the outfit to connect with that feeling.”

Before the tournament, Osaka and Yoon told The New York Times that her look was inspired by Japanese subculture.

“The inspiration for me was definitely Japanese, like Harajuku,” Osaka said. “I remember one of the first times I went to Japan, I saw so much fringe and so many bows.”

The road back to the US Open, which she won twice (2018, 2020), has not been easy for Osaka since her return from maternity leave.

Osaka put up a fight in her match against Muchova, but ultimately lost in a second-set tiebreak, ending her run in Queens.
