Nevada Day celebrated with family-friendly fun, state and local offices closed

Friday marks Nevada Day, when the state recognizes its admission into the Union and its 160th birthday.

Nevada became the 36th state on October 31, 1864, and the Silver State celebrates Nevada Day every year on the last Friday in October.

This holiday means that all state, county and city offices are closed on Friday. There are also no classes for public schools in Clark and Washoe counties.

Federal offices remain open, meaning services such as mail delivery will continue as normal on Fridays.

Southern Nevada’s two professional hockey teams will play special matinee home games for the occasion. The Henderson Silver Knights will play the San Jose Barracuda at 11 a.m. at Lee’s Family Forum, while the Vegas Golden Knights drop the puck at 3 p.m. against the Ottowa Senators in T-Mobile Arena.

Nevada’s newest hockey team, the Tahoe Knight Monsters, will also play a night game against the Jacksonville Icemen at the Tahoe Blue Event Center in Stateline.

AREA15 celebrates Nevada Day with a family-friendly Event ‘Tricks and Treats’ at more than a dozen locations. There will be a costume parade, karaoke, face painting and a Thriller flash mob.

Springs Preserve will host Nevada Day Celebration from 9am to 4pm. Admission is free for Nevada residents with a valid ID and no reservations are required.

Activities include Nevada Ghost Town Storytime, Gold Panning, State Insect Craft and Pub-Style Trivia.
