NFL scores, live updates: Chiefs face 49ers in Super Bowl rematch in Santa Clara

It’s not often that the NFL releases the tickets for a nationally televised game on a Sunday afternoon. It’s also not often that we get an early-season Super Bowl rematch between two teams that still have their sights set on a return to February football.

The Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers have had very different starts to the season. Patrick Mahomes’ numbers are down from some of his splashy statistical years, but the Chiefs continue to win close games. They are 5-0 with early byes, and four of their five wins have come by just one score. The 49ers, on the other hand, have a dominant offense despite injuries to key stretches — second in the league in passing yards and third in rushing yards — but have blown a pair of double-digit leads in the second half en route to a victory. 3-3 points after six weeks.

While there are two games (Raiders at Rams, Panthers at Commanders) at 4:00 PM ET on CBS, the national audience will see Kansas City at San Francisco at 4:25 PM ET on Fox.

Live44 updates

  • Purdy took off in the end zone

This time it’s Jaden Hicks, who ends the 49ers’ drive. Kansas City’s defense is booming again, and check out Chris Jones on the delayed pressure – defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo certainly has some creative ways to confuse offenses.

  • 49ers play a big role on the outside

Brock Purdy connects with Jacob Cowing for a 41-yard play to get back into scoring position. San Fran are still two scores behind, but they will do well to get one in this goal-scoring situation.

  • Washington is 5-2 and atop the NFC East

  • Patrick Mahomes on 4th down and goal for the TD

A running back is often rewarded after a long run with a chance to run the ball into the end zone. In this case, Mahomes called his own number to his 33-yarder earlier in the drive and the Chiefs are up 21-12 in the fourth quarter.

  • Partick Mahomes provides another highlight scene

This one went for 33 yards, and will definitely be on #15’s highlight reel of 2024.

  • Another Brock Purdy interception

This comes in third and is a result of Purdy and his receivers not being on the same page. Remember, Jauan Jennings, Brandon Ayiuk and Deebo Samuel are all out of the game. It is the second interception of the game for the Chiefs defense.

  • The Raiders defense comes up with a turnover to get Las Vegas back into the game

  • Chuba Hubbard gets Carolina on the board

It was a dreary day for the Panthers, but the bagel disappeared from the scoreboard after this four-yard TD run.

  • Washington dominates over Carolina

At the end of three quarters, it’s an all-out blowout in Washington as the Commanders lead the Panthers 37-0. Marcus Mariota, who replaced the injured Jayden Daniels in the first quarter, was 15 of 19 for 165 yards and two touchdowns through three quarters, and Brian Robinson Jr. has 71 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

  • Brock Purdy sneaks it in for San Francisco

A smart QB snap leads to the TD. Anders Carlson missed the PAT, giving the Chiefs a 14-12 lead.

  • Mahomes chose again

Deommodore Lenoir with a potentially game-changing play as Xavier Worthy falls and the 49ers start with the ball just outside the red zone.

  • That’s two TDs on the day for Kyren WIlliams

  • 49ers settle for a field goal to end the first half

14-6 at halftime in San Francisco. The 49ers got their first sustained drive of the game on their final series, but were unable to knock it home inside the 10-yard line. Kansas City gets the kickoff for the second half.

  • Brandon Aiyuk on the field after a big hit

The 49ers are driving, trying to get a late score in the first half, and Aiyuk needed help from the trainers after a catch that put San Francisco in the Red Zone.

  • 49ers in business with a BIG play

Brock Purdy finds George Kittle for a big gainer – 41 yards – to get the 49ers into scoring position late in the first half.

  • Deebo Samuel played just three snaps in today’s game

  • Veteran to veteran for the TD

The Commanders get what they want against Carolina, and things get ugly in Washington in the first half.

  • Kareem Hunt adds a second rushing TD on the day

The Chiefs are up 14-3 and seem like they are clicking on all cylinders. The Chiefs have 157 yards to the 49ers’ 36 yards and KC is 4-for-6 on third down while the 49ers are 0-for-4.

  • Rams defense gets on the board

Kam Curl with the scoop and score for the Rams, who go up 14-3.

  • Mahomes Magic for Xavier Worthy on third down

It’s not really surprising anymore, but it still makes you WOW.
