Nick Sirianni discusses the Eagles’ plan at punt returner

The Eagles have one more practice on Friday before heading to the West Coast for their Sunday Night Football game with the Rams, and head coach Nick Sirianni spent a few minutes giving injury updates and talking about veteran and WR evaluations .

He didn’t want to elaborate too much on why Jalen Hurts was limited on Wednesday or how they used that as a preventative measure, but simply noted that the QB is good to go and will be on the field Sunday night. Sirianni explained that it’s a long season and a lot of guys are doing maintenance right now.

Here’s what else the head coach had to say:

Injury notes

Sirianni said they would wait to see how DeVonta Smith fared on Friday before deciding how to handle his status for Sunday’s game.

The head coach said Britain Covey did a good job returning to practice from IR this week, but again, they’ll have to see how he fares at the end of the day. Sirianni said it’s nice to have Covey back on the field, and couldn’t emphasize enough how good of a teammate he is and how much the players enjoy being around him.

With Covey back on the field, Sirianni said they will do whatever is best for the football team when it comes to how they handle punt returns. Cooper DeJean has done a really good job returning the ball in Covey’s absence, but the head coach made sure Covey was performing on the return before his injury. Sirianni said it’s a good problem to have and they just have to evaluate all the factors to make a decision.

About dealing with discipline

Sirianni said if you ask the players, he thinks they would say he is fair in reviewing the tape. When a play’s standard is met, they celebrate, and when it isn’t, they correct – and they do both in front of the entire team, because everyone can learn something from every play.

As for the disciple regarding off-field issues, Sirianni acknowledged that they have team rules that they expect everyone to follow, and just like on the field, they celebrate when the standard is met, and when it is not , they tackle it.

On evaluating veterans

The head coach was asked how they evaluate the performance of veterans, guys like Jake Elliott, who have built trust over time and how they balance past performance with current performance.

“You take everything into account. Just like when you’re trying to make decisions about game management matters, everything is taken into account: what’s happening currently and what’s happened in the past. You see practice every day.”

Sirianni further explained that they believe that if you practice average, you will play average and if you practice well, you will play great. Media and fans don’t get to see those practices and the work that goes into them, but it’s those days that give him and the coaching staff confidence and trust in their guys.

At WR depth

If DeVonta Smith can’t play on Sunday, Sirianni was asked what gives him confidence in Jahan Dotson and Johnny Wilson taking on bigger roles.

“Just getting better every day. Both have made some big plays in recent weeks. Johnny (Wilson) catches his first touchdown pass. Jahan (Dotson) catches a deep ball in the Jacksonville game, and then the Dallas game.

Again, and then the things we see in practice. These guys come in every day working hard, they put it on the line every day, they’ve had good practices all week and we’re excited about their capabilities if they have to go. And we’ve had some good experiences this year with guys stepping in and contributing, and that’s the great thing about a team.
