NLDS: LA Dodgers fan who threw the first pitch to Padres players during Game 2 speaks out

As the Dodgers took a blow in Game 2 of the NLDS, losing 10-2 to the San Diego Padres, the tension boiled over for fans at Dodger Stadium – on a rowdy night at Elysian Park.

The game was forced to pause for nine minutes in the seventh inning when fans began throwing stuff at the San Diego Padres players.

“There’s no reason to ever throw anything at players, no matter what’s going on,” Dodgers pitcher Jack Flaherty said.

The tension seemed to have already started in the first inning. Padres outfielder Jurickson Profar robbed Mookie Betts of a home run and grabbed the ball from the stands.

Later in the game, he handed a ball to a Dodger fan, who then threw it back onto the field. That fan was Mario Zazueta.

“Profar has a ball and he’s looking straight at me. I said, ‘I don’t want it,'” Zazueta said. “I said, ‘No, I’m going to throw it away.’ He just handed me the ball, with a big smile and grin, and as soon as I got that ball I just turned around and threw it over the line.”

A few seconds later another ball is thrown next to Profar. And when other items started hitting the field, security swarmed the outfield.

Zazueta was eventually kicked out of the match. He said he understands why, although he is a little upset that other fans started throwing things on the field, causing a pause in the game.

“It just puts a black eye on the Dodger market because 99.9% of people aren’t like that,” Zazueta said. “You get that one percent that just ruins it for everyone.”

The Dodgers did not comment on the fans’ behavior Sunday night, but fans placed much of the blame for the stoppage of play on the Padres players for inciting the crowd.

“When I saw the video of him actually taunting – like when you look back and watch what he’s doing, back and forth, I understand why – even though it wasn’t correct – he was throwing objects on the field,” Dodgers fan Javier said González.

Los Angeles police said no arrests were made at the stadium Sunday night.

Game 3 of the NLDS is scheduled for Tuesday in San Diego.
