Parts of northern New Jersey will likely see their first snowfall of the season Thursday evening through Friday.

How much snow will depend on elevation, the National Weather Service said, with “total snow accumulations of 2-4 inches at elevations above 500 feet, with the highest amounts above 1,000 feet.”

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for western Passaic County and New York’s Lower Hudson Valley from 7 p.m. Thursday to 10 a.m. Friday.

“If you are near or north of I-78, give yourself some extra travel time in the morning as roads may be muddy or snow-covered,” the NWS advised.

Here are some projected snow totals for North Jersey:

  • West Milford – 4.2 inches
  • Wantage – 2 inches
  • Morristown – less than an inch
  • Paramus – 0.1 inches

“We are closely monitoring winter weather, which is expected to impact our region tonight and tomorrow,” NJ Office of Emergency Management tweeted. “Avoid unnecessary travel as roads can be very slippery in parts of the state as temperatures drop.”

Any snow will likely turn back to rain by late morning, except in more mountainous areas, the NWS said.

The rain is desperately needed for New Jersey, which is under a drought watch after nearly two months without significant rainfall. The state had also experienced a spate of forest fires due to the extremely dry conditions.
