Northern Lights in Oklahoma this week

The sun has been quite active this week, sending highly charged particles to Earth via the solar wind. When the particles reach Earth, they gather near the poles due to Earth’s geomagnetic field. If the particles are very highly charged, they can sometimes produce colorful light in the sky. These lights are commonly known as the Northern Lights because they are much more common at latitudes closer to the North Pole. But this week, these colorful light displays have been seen as far south as Oklahoma and Texas.

The lights were prevalent in the Oklahoma sky Monday night and again Thursday evening, and some of our KTUL Stormchasers were able to capture some fantastic photos for our viewing pleasure. David Gaede took an incredible photo Monday night in Oologah, and another Thursday night in Skiatook.

Stormchaser Nacoma Hutchison also captured some beautiful colors in the town of Jay, OK.

The “Northern Lights Forecast” gives Oklahomans another chance to see the dancing colorful lights Friday evening, and the sky forecast is favorable! To see more photos of the Northern Lights this week here in Oklahoma, head over to the NewsChannel8 Facebook page and check out the comments section of our Northern Lights post. We hope to see you there!
