October 24 Windy and cooler, but warming up again and staying dry: increased fire danger

October 24, 2024

Thursday morning report

I’m very concerned that the lack of weather could become the weather story. The series of very beautiful and sunny days of the past three weeks came after 11 days in a row of rain. There is no rain in sight for the next week and adding the falling foliage now with a blanket of dry leaves means there is an increased risk of wildfires.

We’ll have some cooler days this coming week, combined with more warm-ups that could push us to record highs next week… even on Halloween. Each swing is accompanied by gusts of wind… which only adds to the evaporation of the soil and the dry conditions.

FIRE HAZARD

Red Flag Warning = The greatest fire danger is in New Jersey.

Increased Fire Danger – Most of the region. The strong wind and low humidity increase the chance that any flames will spread!

With only two days of rain early in the month…AND we are down 6 inches since September 1st…AND now the leaves are falling potentially adding kindling…Any flame can flare up quickly.

This can start from lighting bonfires to throwing a lit cigarette, but (yes, some people still smoke).October 24 fire danger red flag warning

Drought update

This card is from last week. It’s being updated today and I expect the drought colors to spread to more areas.

Conditions are very dry in much of the region. A severe drought has developed in the mountains from Western Maryland to West Virginia.

Extremely dry conditions will increase on Delmarva over the next week.

Baltimore stats:

Rainfall

  • -2.98” for the month
  • Only had measurable rain on October 1 and 2
  • Part of 11 days in a row from September 22 to October 2

DOWN

Morning surface weather

While we remain dry, there will be a rush of new air masses that will cause our temperatures to fluctuate slightly. A push of cooler air will be met with a few more warmups.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25

Just dry! This is the theme. The lack of weather is the weather story.

LOOKING FORWARD

Saturday again

Stays dry AND windy! Cooler air is moving in again…just at the edge of Canada…so weekend temperatures will drop.

October 24 weather forecast Saturday

Animation: Saturday to Tuesday

No rain! Even the cold front that arrives on Saturday looks dry now. So I eliminated the chance of rain.

Temperatures will fluctuate a bit, especially in the 60s in the afternoon…with 50s inland. We’ll warm up again next week.

October 24 weather forecast weekend

Tuesday

Another push of warm air as high pressure builds to pump in more dry air with westerly winds. This brings back the 70’s once again.

7 day forecast

No rain in sight! Temperatures will be a bit of a rollercoaster, but nothing extreme. However, next week temperatures will rise back into the upper 70s and perhaps reach 80 degrees by Halloween (next Thursday).

REPETITION OF MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA

I am aware that there are some spelling and grammatical errors and that other errors occur occasionally. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even for the computer glitches I may overlook. I’ve made a few public statements over the years, but if you’re new here you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out about it during my sophomore year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my degree in meteorology and being the first to earn the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington area.

One of my professors told me that I had gotten this far without even knowing it, and that I shouldn’t let it be a crutch for the future. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely right! I miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell checker on my computer sometimes does it an injustice and makes things worse. I can also make mistakes when predicting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ things can get sticky.

There has been no editor to check my work while writing and to have it ready to ship in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves that what you read is really mine… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
