On Virat Kohli’s muted reaction to dismissal, Harsha Bhogle makes ‘most expressive’ comment

India star Virat Kohli is usually a ball of fire on the field. Particularly during his time as India captain, Kohli had built a reputation for wearing his heart on his sleeve and approaching every match with an aggressive yet fair attitude. However, Friday saw a contrasting side from Kohli during Day 3 of the first Test between India and New Zealand. With Rachin Ravindra dealt out, the entire team had risen to celebrate. However, commentators Harsha Bhogle and Ian Smith noted that Kohli had kept his celebrations muted.

In the 89th over of the New Zealand innings, Ravindra was bowled out behind the bowling of Mohammed Siraj. Not only had the entire Indian team gotten into a celebratory mood, even referee Michael Gough had delivered it in convincing fashion.

However, after a hesitant review, replays revealed that the ball had not hit Ravindra’s bat, but instead a distinct sound had appeared. That’s why Ravindra survived.

It was then that former batsman and now commentator Ian Smith pointed out that Kohli, at first slip, had not celebrated at all throughout the proceedings. Replays confirmed that Kohli had indeed not celebrated.

Fellow commentator Harsha Bhogle went on to call Virat Kohli ‘top’ of the list of ‘most expressive people in the world’, perhaps meaning Kohli’s muted reaction could have indicated it wasn’t over.

India vs New Zealand, First Test Day 3: As it happened

While India put up a much stronger batting effort compared to the first innings, they suffered a major blow at the end of Day 3’s play. Virat Kohli, batting on 70, was caught behind on the last ball of the day.

India ended Day 3 at 231/3 and still trailed New Zealand by a wide margin of 125 runs. Sarfaraz Khan remained undefeated at the end of the day.
