Patrick Mahomes is fined for unsportsmanlike conduct after touchdown celebration in Chiefs-Bills game

BUFFALO, NY. (KCTV) – Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes remained calm as he reacted to his team’s fourth-quarter touchdown, but his choice gesture still cost him more than $14,000 in fines.

There were about 12 minutes left in the Kansas City Chiefs’ Week 11 game against the Buffalo Bills. Mahomes was already trailing 14-23 and it took an extended series of plays before he got the opportunity he needed. He snapped the ball to Noah Gray in the back corner of the end zone, cutting the Bills’ lead to just three points.

In a clip posted by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Mahomes is shown making two “finger guns” in celebration.

The National Football League later labeled the pose a “violent gesture” and fell under the definition of unsportsmanlike conduct. The fine for a first offense of unsportsmanlike conduct is $14,096.

According to CBS Sports, Mahomes had only been penalized once before in his career. Last season, he was fined $50,000 for “verbal abuse” of officials, coincidentally during the team’s previous loss to the Bills on Dec. 10, 2023.

The Chiefs ultimately fell to the Bills, 21-30, breaking an undefeated streak dating back to December 31, 2023.

While the team is no longer looking for a perfect 2024 season, they are favored to win their Nov. 24 game against the Carolina Panthers. The game starts at 12:00 PM and will be broadcast locally on CBS.
