First quarter

The Bears won the coin toss and deferred, allowing Drake Maye and the Patriots offense to get on the field first. Facing an opening 3rd and 4, Maye couldn’t find an open receiver before being brought down for a sack.

A 38-yard punt return by DeAndre Carter put the Bears over midfield for the first time. An Anfernee Jennings coverage sack set up Chicago for a 3rd and 10, where Caleb Williams’ pass was dropped by Rome Odunze.

A bad punt by the Bears started New England’s next drive at their own 34-yard line. Maye got things going with an impressive 28-yard completion to Austin Hooper before two consecutive runs set the chains in motion. Two more runs then set up a 3rd-and-5, with Maye only gaining four yards with his legs. Rhamondre Stevenson went for it on 4th and 1 and took him to the ground. Then faced with a 3rd and 6 inside the 20, Maye bought time before finding KJ Osborn in the end zone, but the receiver was out of bounds. Joey Slye’s 30-yard field goal was good then. (Patriots 3:0 Bears)

The Bears got the run game going on their next drive to help pick up a few first downs to move into New England territory. A run by Jaquelin Roy then pushed them back to a 3rd and 7th, where Williams was sacked by Deatrich Wise.

Back with the ball, New England got moving when a quick hitter to DeMario Douglas at second went for 17 yards. The drive quickly stopped when Maye rolled out to his right and threw an interception right to TJ Edwards.

Second quarter

The Bears took over the field near midfield and faced an opening third and third. A screen for DJ Moore was read by Marcus Jones and Jaylinn Hawkins to record a two-yard loss. Chicago then punted.

The Patriots offense faced a quick 3rd and 7 to start their next drive, with Maye’s pass to Douglas being short and incomplete.

Back-to-back completions led to two consecutive first downs for Caleb Williams and the Bears offense. Set up with a 3rd and 4, Williams missed an open Moore, leading to a fourth down play that Williams converted with his legs. Two consecutive runs from Swift totaled 17 yards, putting Chicago in the red zone. Two runs – made possible by Jeremiah Pharms – led to a 3rd-and-10, where Brenden Schooler applied pressure as a QB spy to help force an incompletion. Chicago then settled for a field goal. (Patriots 3: 3 bears)
