Penn State’s pass rush looms as a big weapon against a Minnesota team that struggled against Rutgers

Penn State’s defense will get to Minnesota quarterback Max Brosmer sometime in Minneapolis on Saturday.

How many times can the Nittany Lions pressure Brosmer? That’s a big question in the game.

Brosmer was sacked four times in the Golden Gophers’ most recent loss, a 26-19 loss to Rutgers in Piscataway.

One of the sacks, by Rutgers defensive lineman Jordan Walker, yielded a safety with 6:51 playing that padded the Scarlet Knights’ lead to 23-16.

“It executes the little details really well,” Brosmer said earlier this week when asked about the offensive touches of 6-4 Minnesota versus 9-1 Penn State.

“Staying on track is the most important thing, staying on track in first and second, and getting to third and being manageable.

“(The Lions) do a really good job on third-and-seven-plus (yards),” Brosmer continued. “They run their defense really well on third-and-long.”

No. 4 Penn State’s defense has better athletes than Rutgers.

The Lions’ top edge rusher, Abdul Carter, has 17.5 tackles for loss, eight sacks and five quarterback hurries.

The Lions defense has collected 70 tackles for loss, 25 sacks and 22 quarterback hurries in 10 games.

Brosmer has thrown 14 touchdown passes and is averaging 225.1 passing yards per game. But he hasn’t faced a defense like Penn State’s.

“It always starts up front,” said the 6-2, 225-pound Brosmer, a transfer from New Hampshire.

“You have to make sure the O-line has the right protection, and change that so it best suits what we’re in, what pressure they bring.

“But also knowing what pressure they exert and the reporting behind it. … After that you’re just playing football.”
