On what defines a great actor director:

“You shouldn’t have to talk to an actor much when you hire him. You saw something in them that you want for the role and that can lead to chaos. You need to make sure everyone knows that your vision is very clear because they will adopt it. We find a weakness in a director and go, okay, I understand this… all actors want to direct… and there has to be one captain to keep that vision clear….”

On the importance of dialogue and the genre of comedy:

“You can have the best idea for a movie… but what am I saying as an actor, you know what our dialogue is? What is the ease or tension in the pun you put on the page. I always like to rattle the cage of genres because people in comedies don’t know they’re funny. So I like my comedies as really straight…Alan Arkin…he was my favorite. He was so funny because he just played it as someone who doesn’t find anything funny… so anything that points the finger at ‘this is funny’, writing-wise… like a punchline in a movie doesn’t really work because it doesn’t work really in life…’

On playing in a punk band before acting:

“We were Beastie boys rip-offs, but yeah, we had fun… it took a few years to do it, I got a cool scar on my temple…”

About Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance) apologizing between takes Game of Thrones:

“I love Charlie DanceHe’s one of my favorite people and he played my father on the show and all my father did on the show was humiliate me and sentence me to death… so he made it a habit because we would really get into those things investing… talk about great dialogues. Dan Wies And David Benioff gave us the best dialogue, so it really felt lived… like between every take he came up to me and gently touched me on the shoulder. We didn’t want to embrace it because of time, and it also felt very fatherly. He played a terrible person, but he’s one of my favorite people and it was a shame how it ended, in the toilet…’

On perseverance to stick with acting:

“I was angry, I think, too angry for a long time… I just knew what the entertainment industry was offering to people my size, and for me that wasn’t acting. But I surrounded myself with really brilliant people. Not intentionally, but just friendships. I call it the tribe and we simply carried that friendship and working environment as one whole, together into the future. Because you can’t do it alone, I couldn’t do it alone and that’s the beauty of what I do for a living: the collaboration. So I was lucky to find really great people who inspired me more every day.
